  • Looking for a good headset

Curious what you all use for communication. I'd like something that connects to a 2-way radio so that it will easily work with other riders. What kind of microphone should i look for? i just really worry about wind noise and volume. I see things like throat mics, boom mics... i see a system i like on ebay (#4618997470) that has a earbud and boom. I have a half helmet, but my ears aren't covered so velcro speakers are out. what kind of relatively cheap ($40-$80) and good systems do you recommend? Thanks!!

Stay away from the throat mics!! I've got one for HAM, and it does NOT work well. I think you can find earphones and boom mics at most good touring shops.

I bought a set of Uniden VOX-capable (voice activated) GMRS/FRS radios off of Ebay on the super cheap. Got them for 10 dollars including shipping. I bought a set of over-the-ear headsets from the manufacturer (they cost more than the radios at 18.00 after shipping ) and they work really well. The over the ear design fits in a helmet really well, and they have a long enough boom to be fairly close to the mouth.

I havent been able to test them riding but a little bit, and they seemed to work ok. I use a full face helmet though, so wind hasn't been an issue.

I use them for work all the time now.

The nice thing about them is that anyone can get in on the conversation as long as they can get on the same channel. Would be fun in a group enviornment, I'd imagine. There are lots of available channels, and subchannels, too. So you can be private, as well.

If I ever get the time I want to design a circuit that will interface the radio to a normal set of earbuds so I can listen to music and have it switch in the radio whenever someone talks on it. I dont figure it'll be all that complicated, just need the time to do it.

In my very recent and limited experience I've found that using "the right tool for the job", as expensive as it may be, is usually the best way to go.

Originally I just wanted rider to pax comms and tried a couple of walkie talkie/2 ways with different headsets that simply didn't work.

I picked up a chatterbox that worked just fine until the "war dept" / wife, decided that she wanted a bike. This constituted the purchase of an upgrade to transciever. I/we can listen to tunes, when one of us speaks it over rides the tunes and if I'm not mistaken there is also a porthole for a cell phone.

I'm just as money conscieous or more so than the next guy but believe me it's worth the extra $.

I use an Autocomm, good volume, has options for music, cell phone and CB/FRS. I added a PTT, and the system I got included a passenger connection. The spekaers and mike are wired insde the helmet, and have held up well for the last year.

Mine is powered by a 9v, and I carry extras. Bike power is available, but I move mine one base unit amoung the 3 bikes, and it is just easier that way.

Autocom was having a half price sale, not sure is that is still going on.
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.
