  • Solid mounts for your XS1100

    Hi All
Just to say that I've put details on our UK website about fitting solid mounts to your XS1100. I've sourced loads of info and Pegasus Engineering are willing to modify their vmax mounts to suit.

    Check it out here

.. this is neet, have you gotten to ride a bike with this mod yet?
this should take some of the rubbery feeling out of the frame.
remember the label put on the XS11 in the early mag articals, "flexy flyer"
    ..thanx Mike

        Hi Gnepig
No, I haven't ridden it yet as I'm doing other stuff with the project.
I can't see any reason why it wouldn't help with the handling especially as Yamaha are now shipping the new vmaxes with solid mounts instead of the old ones like the XS1100 !!

You can do your own, I haven't got enough time left in the next 5 years to do all of your XS1100 museum collection

Mike, the replacement alloy mounts are 28mm diameter, what's the 25mm measurement apply to?

              Hi Pggg
The leading edge of the mount is rounded off to aid fitting (radius edge) and 25mm refers to where the rounded part ends.
              Hope this helps.

Well, I'm interested in hearing if the increase in vibration is acceptable. Maybe ok for around town, but not for riding all day?

                  Hi Losershoes
Judging by your bike list, what other people might find acceptable vibration - it still maybe not enough for you. The old Nortons have enough to dislodged teeth fillings

Well, I had mine dynamically balanced, and it REALLY made a difference. Not smooth, but no numb fingers after five minutes.

I have a very different set of standards when riding a verticle twin, and what I expect from a 4 cylinder.

I would expect the buzz from a solid mounted XS1100 at 8K rpm would really light you up.

                        Hi Bandet1
I suppose there must be a tiny bit of gain as the engine isn't trying to compress the rubber in the mounts. If the mounts weren't there the engine would move one way or another and that could be seen as wasted energy?

"I'm gettin' bad vibes about this"

Posted a while back were I had to do some warranty work on a 750 Vulcan. After I was done, the guy brought the bike back in. Vibrated so much that the license plate bracket snapped off, bulbs blew out, and he could barely hold the handle bars.
Seems that some idiot, I won't say whom, used his impact gun when tightening the motor mounts, essentially compressing the flexible rubber mounts to solid mounts.
Loosening them, and then torquing them to the proper tightness, remedied the prob.

When I was racing cars in the 70's, I would chain the engine to the frame. The torque that was wasted by the engine trying to lift from the mount was then transferred to the axle.
This only applied under accelleration. On a bike... you will get constant vibration.
"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!' ('Bones' McCoy)

A solid engined XS1100 surely wouldn't vibrate much more. Weren't most 70's 80's bikes the same? I don't remember having rubber mounted motors on other bikes I had but there must be some extra vibes though because if the clutch cable is jammed between tank and camcover the tank vibrates
