  • Fork tubes pitted

I've hit a little snag with Zilla (XJ11).

The fork tubes we installed were slightly pitted. I have put about 600 miles on it since the rebuild. Now the new seals are leaking. I suspect it maybe due to the pitting.

The pitting isn't bad...but then I don't know how much the seals can take.

XJ11 fork tubes are hard to find. Would re-chroming them be an option?...Any other known fixes? If I could find soem decent ones I'd buy 'em. But the ones on ebay look worse than the ones I have.

My XJ has some pitting also, so I took some oil and emory cloth to them. The pits are still there, but they are smooth... so doesn't tear up the seal. Mine don't leak..... yet being the imperative word. Maybe this can get you by long enough to find a good set. While you're at it... find us 2 sets!

A cool trick that works real good is using JB Quick and then sand it down in a lathe. No lathe, just do it by hand and it will help save the seals.

I had fork legs hard chromed and reground a couple of years ago. Cost me about 110 UKP so I'd guess about 200 USD for you guys.

          Fork legs?

I'm talking about the inner tubes that run inside the seals. Wonder if a standard "bumper" chrome job would do the trick?

Forking by Frank, and you can get brand new tubes! you can even go longer if you want. I don't have the link, but I know it's been on the board before.

Hmmmm...I wonder if this is the guy I saw with an Ebay auction. They had "new" fork tubes with a buy it now of $267. But I can't find the place anywhere.

              I'll search for Frank.

              Thanks Ray

If I can...I'll be there! It looks like a million bucks...Except for the forks leaking. That will be fixed very soon.

                      Ah sorry.

                      Fork legs = fork tubes.

Needs to be hard chrome not decorative stuff.

                        Frankly, I don't give a fork!

                        Hey Maximan,

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier, I could have saved you some trouble. I got mine 5 years ago, Frank made them, about $200.00 for the set, and they were the extended style! Also plug and play! They still look good, and don't leak! ENJOY!

Well it's good to know they make a quality fork tube. Ya never know about some of these parts. But OEM tubes are not available.

Forking by Frank has been around since I started on motorcycles, in the late 60's. You don't last this long with a lousy product.
