  • xs650 rotor

I have a question on my xj11. if I were to take the stator rotor from an xs650, which is the same diamiter and width as my xj rotor, would it still work in my xj? the only noticable difference between rotors is the number of the "v" looking teeth on the outside of the rotor. whould this cause the battery to not charge?

    Charge It!

    Hey there Jeho,

I'm no electrics GURU, in fact, I'm no GURU at all!! However, a review of the Factory Fiche #'s for the following parts reveal the SAME ROOT # which just means they are the same "TYPE" part!

    10M-81650-10-00 ROTOR ASS'Y 82 XJ11

    3G1-81650-10-00 ROTOR ASS'Y 82 XS650

    4H7-81650-10-00 ROTOR ASS'Y 82 XJ650
However, they all have different 3 alphanumeric prefix listings, which means that they are NOT the same part.

I am just wagering a guess here that the 650 may not be wound the same as the 1100, therefore it might NOT provide the same level of charging power as the XJ's!?

Some other True Electronics GURU may chime in with something different!? IF yours isn't charging properly, have you already replaced your brushes? Have you already done the diagnostics and found your rotor to be shorted? Have you ruled out the Reg/Rect as a possible problem?

The XS650's system has just 168 watts of charging power.
That is barely enough to run the engine with the lights on.
Using the brake or the flasher is already draining the battery.
XS1100 and XS650- what do you need more?

No. The rotor only provides the magnetic field. It's the stator that determines the output. If the rotor will fit, it'll probably be OK but I'd bet it wouldn’t fit.

I took the rotor and had a part of it milled to match the origonal (broken) rotor, so it fits perfect. It runs the lights and engine just fine, it just doesnt fully charge the battery.

              Just spinning your rotor!

Are you sure the ROTOR/ALT is running the lights, or are you just running OFF of the battery? Do you have a voltmeter? Across the battery you should get 14 or so volts at around 3K rpm. IF you're only getting 12 or less, then it's not charging. There are trouble shooting techniques to figure out what other component is faulty, either the windings, or the REG/RECT, even just bad connections, poor grounds, etc.!
