Is the 81 XS11 transmission interchangeable with the 78 XS11?

Yes it is. The basic engines are the same, different heads, but internals can be swapped with a little care. To verify, you can go to Yamaha's web site and look at the parts catalog. The trans parts are the same part numbers...
