  • Trip-Ometer?

    My trip does not work on my 82 XJ1100.
    I am unsure what to refer to this as, I am into to vehicles & motorcycles, but miss the smal things until they bother me.
    I searched all over and can not find a fix for this. Anybody had this problem before, or know how to fix it? I would like to know how far my bike can go on 1 tank, with out the math. I have thought of taking the gauge display apart, claning it, and rebuilding, but I want to find a fix first if I can.

    My trip odometer on my 79 XS11 SF is acting up as well. The hundred mile wheel is randomly increasing while the ten and single mile wheels are functioning properly. Any suggestions how to remedy?

      I think I may have the same problem on my 79n XS11 SF. At least that would explain why I got 170 miles on one tank of gas and only had to put 2.5 gals in to fill it. At the time I just told myself that I had forgot to reset the trip odometer, but I was sure that I had.

      I have a speedometer of a 79 XS650 Special that looks to be identical. It will be awhile but I hope to tear it apart to see if I can find a fix for the odometer and the speedometer needle which jumps around a lot at certain speeds. I'll let you know what I find.

        Sigma computers

        One thing that you might consider as a temporary (or permanent replacement) is a bicycle computer mounted to your motorcycle. These things have many different features including average speed, trip length in time, trip length in miles or kms, highest speed, and a clock. It is all magentic and just requires that you imput your wheel size, and mount the magnets. Sigma is what I and a few other listers have on their bikes. They make a series of these computers with the basic features or all the features and then some. Work great! However, may not be the best thing if you absolutely want your stock trip meter fixed.

          FYI on the sigma

          The Sigma's have proven to be able to read at the faster wheel speeds. I tried several other brands(lower priced) and found they quit monitoring at 70-90 mph. Both the Sigma's I have (BC800 & BC1200) have seen over 120 mph without missing a beat.

            Take it off and tear it down, Make sure it is clean, Lube it up and put it back togather.

            I have had mine apart several time ( Comes apart and go's togather easy)

                1. Speedo Smashed from P.O. put togather one from two
                2. Changed Bulbs
                3. Fix Speedo & Odometer
                4. Repaint outer cover
                5. had to put in a different Computer Control

                I did not fix the same thing more them once I have had them apart several times.

                  Trip Meter

                  After loking at this thread, and going insane over my trip meter's 100 dial changing for no apparent reason, I figured out what MY problem was. MAybe this can be of help to others. It's the simplest possible thing to check, but it took me a month to think to check it.

                  When I was backing up (out of the garage, into parking spaces) was when the problem seemed to be the very worst. I was a bit bewildered, until I realized that when I was backing up and had the bars cranked fully to the right, the clutch cable was hanging on the trip meter reset button. On my '80 stock speedo (goes to 85 mph), the reset it a knob you turn to reset. When I was backing up with the bars cranked to the right, the clutch cable was hanging with just enough pressure to occasionally move the 100 dial 1 turn. I simply made a clamp (loose as if you put a tight one to your bar, the clutch cable will bind and make it hard to pull, and put excessive wear on the cable. I jut clamped it so it was just below the reset knob at all bar positions, and since then the trip meter has worked flawlessly. I know, a very stupid thing to overlook. I spent 5 minutes laughing at myself in a parking lot when I finally realized what was causing the problem. A month of going crazy, taking the speedo apart, cleaning and lubine it, putting it all back together, and it still didn't work. All because of the stupid clutch cable. It was worth a good laugh.

                    Thanks buddy... I was having the same problem with my trip meter. Just went out and cheked and the clutch cable was doing the same thing. I took a couple of cable ties and loosely attched them to the handle bars. Problem solved. I had the bike about a month now and was thinking I was going to have to try and get a new speedo or sending unit.
