  • Can you "STAND" for an Un-Needed Tech Tip?

    Hey Folks,

Thought I'd post this anyways, even though almost nobody will need it, since most folks have sought ways to LOWER their Xs's. However, I raised mine thru putting my 4" extended forks on, and my center stand would no longer work WITHOUT my putting a 1.5" thick 2x6 piece of wood under it!

So...I finally decided to figure out a way to extend them! I first measured the lower tubes, and they were 1" outer diameter. I then found some black Iron/steel pipe at Lowes with 1" inner diameter, about 4.5" long, they had 1" threaded ends, that I just cut off!

I also cut off the angled braces from the left tube that provides more bracing since it's used to push/pull the bike up onto the stand. This the made both tube sections just above the footplates nice and round with several inches of even length to work with! I realized that I needed to cut the sections BELOW the attachment of the cross beam both for structural integrity, and also to not interfere with the retractor spring!

Then I just measured off how far to stick the pieces of pipe extension onto the cut off ends, and then welded them in place!
Then I rewelded the foot lever brace back on, however the upper inner brace was too small, so I fashioned a new one from 1" thick square tubing, and welded in place.

I've just painted it, and it's still curing, so it'll be a few days before I get it remounted, and tested out, but I'm sure it will work to give me that needed lift!

now if you could just figure out how i can use a center stand and my 4 into 1 all at the same time while still taking a corner faster than 13 miles an hour. In all seriousness that looks like some good work!!! nice beefy bracing.

      Brace Yourself!

      Hey Travis,

IF your centerstand cross member hits the 4-1 pipes under the engine, then you could cut out a section out of it, and reweld it witha bend or such in it to allow clearance with the crossmember and the pipes!? Also, my pipes came with a bracket to mount on the left passenger peg bolt, that impacts the left CS foot lever, to keep it from hitting the frame, and I'll be adjusting that bracket a bit shorter, to allow the CS to swing up further closer to the frame, which will allow me greater ground clearance for steeper lean angles on that side!!

I would recommend welding the U shaped pipe first, then cutting out the excess center section, to help keep the mounting points in the proper location. After welding on that last large brace, the contraction action pulled the mounts a few mm apart!! Had to bang it a bit to reshape it to be able to fit into the mounts!

had thought about that when I first put it on, but I still use the CS when i need to, just slide in the bolts and pull her up. I do not have to put on the nuts or springs b/c I just use it for oil changes and things of that nature. i just do not have the convience of taking it with me unless i throw it in a saddle bag. sure wish that I would have had it with me when the bolt vibrated out of my side stand last year!!!! one day when i have far too much time on my hands i may mess with it and see what i can acomplish!
