  • Air Filter question

I've been putting back together a 79 XS11 for a friend for a while and have a question for other owners. The only thing in the air box is a screen filter. It appears to have a thin element in between the screen. Is there supposed to be a foam element or is this all that Yamaha uses? If this is it, is it supposed to be oiled?
Sorry for the dumb question but used to working on GSs, not XSs

    Update

Just found the K&N name on this filter. Oil type filter. I take it this filter just needs to be lightly sprayed with oil? Thanks Bob

          For what it is worth

I just put a new filter into a 79 Special. There was a K&N filter in the box, but the fit was funny so I ordered a Yamaha filter.

The factory filter was bigger and fit nicely, down around the ribs in the box. I traced both filters and there was a significant difference.

The K&N filter that was in the unit had the number 140 on it. I was curious, so in checking around it looked like the proper K&N filter model was a 1400.

Like I said - for what it is worth.

I have a k&n on my bike and it is great. Fits perfectly I know K&N still sell the filter for our bikes so I would check them out. They last forever, worth the money.
