  • How to make the engine shine?

    Whats the best way to make the engine shine again...I have a 79 xs1100 sp..thats in good conditon..but the engine is just dull looking...whats the cheapest and best way to shine it up again to make it look good?

    Do a search for "polish", "cleaning aluminum", "clearcoat", etc. - many previous threads offer members' suggestions on the topic.

              Very nice!!!

              Copied last pic. Will blow up in photo shop to see mounting brackets. Have reg. engine stand, been wanting to make adapter for XS.

                The way the chrome looks on that engine is how i want mine to look..but not sure how to get it looking like that.

                  It's all polished aluminum. You can either take it to a metal polisher, do it your self, or trade your old in at Merriam cycle for polished parts.

                    The problem is keeping it shinny after all that polishing. THe only way I've found is to never ride the bike. I'd rather ride so my engine is way less than pretty.

                    My 1979 reso-custom is going to have a black engine. It will look good and be easier to keep that way.

                      I'd have it powder coated black. Then polish the ends of the fines. Polish the fines on the middle gear and the little Yamaha on the final drive and edges of the fins. It would look excellent.

                        I'm going to try this after I get everything polished up. Supposed to work really well.
