I've just had word from my cylinder head repairer that the valves I sourced and supplied to him are wrong. I've checked and they are correct for an XS but am wondering if there was more than one type fitted durring the relatively short production life of the XS.

Mine is an 1980 Australian market 1100G, part numbers are:

    Exhaust 3H5 12121 00
    Inlet 3H5 1211 01

Any ideas before i give up and part the bike out?

The valves in the 1100 can be one of TWO sizes!. The change was made in 1980. Check the tech tips, or do a search on intake valves, to find some of the threads.
Are the valves you bought too big?, if so, you need the early valves.

Cheers for that DiverRay. At least i can get some relief there are only 2 types and not half a dozen. And of course i picked the wrong one, so that'll only mean it'll be good the next time round.

I've emailled MR cycles the supplier and hopefully they will be okay with doing a swap.
