80 air box in a 79

Hi,
I was wondering if I could put an 80 - 83 airbox in a 79 xs1100 standard. Had a fight with the airbox bolts. Got the bolt out along with the airbox in pieces. While I'm at it can I use a 78 airbox. Any information on this subject would be appreciated. Anybody has the correct airbox or know where to get one ready to put a filter in and ride I'm looking. Please let me know. As you can tell I'm no mechanic LOL so I would prefer one that I could just bolt on you know boots bolts and all the stuff I need. Let's just say complete. Also how difficult is it to replace the airbox with individual filters. Beside jetting do they just slip on? Thanks you guys long time no see been trying to get her ready to ride for the spring.

XS11 Air "Pandora's" box!

Hey there 79xs11,

I reviewed the Yamaha Parts Fiche, and the boxes are listed with different numbers for the 2 sets of years where they change, coinciding with the carb changes. The 78-79 carbs use the vent tubes from the carbs into the airbox, the 80-81 don't, they vent the bowls into the inlet bell! The tube nipples on the box are still shown in the later years, but they are PLUGGED, so if you want to use the later year box, you'll just need to drill holes in those nipples into the box! Other than that, I can't see any major difference in design, so they should bolt right on otherwise!

Air pods are easy to put on. Rejetting is a possibilty, usually a couple of sizes up from stock with OEM Exhaust, more if you're also running aftermarket pipes! It's recommended to attach a supporting strap to the carbs and the frame since they aren't being supported by the intakes and airbox. There are some generic pod filters that have too much of a lip on the inside of the mounting rubber, and it restricts the airflow into the carbs making them run way too rich. I can't remember which brand they are, but I think they were EMGO, but you can do a search for POD FILTERS, this was discussed quite a bit, also can't remember where they got the faulty ones from??

Thanks for all the info. Got another one for you. I found some nice pod filters k&n and some uni foam ones. I belive they were like $130 for the k&n and $70 for the uni. I'm thinking I have to cap off the two nipples on the carbs that connect to the air box.
Do I also cap off the fat black rubber hose LOL that connects to the center of the air box at the top. Support bracket for the carbs. Clamp on the filters and rejet. Am I on track here? This is just in case I can't replace pandora's air box. Clymers isn't much help in the airbox department. Also wondering about the inlet I saw some 52 mm and 54 mm. Which ones should I go with they both claim they'll fit. So far I'm at 3 cap offs a support bracket clamp on filter and rejet carbs. I have a 79 F I believe. Which ever the standard is. I'm in Fulton county 27 on the thruway.

Yeah, actual K&N pods are rather expensive, but what source are you using for the Unifilter ones? They are available from JCW in a set of 4 for around $49.00 IIRC.

I have the Uni ones, they are not as pretty as the K&N style, but are functional, and I can guarantee that the Uni's dont' have that big "lip" to interfere with the air flow!

As for the size, I just rechecked both my spare bank of 79 carbs and the 80SG carbs, and both have the 54mm intake bell, so I'm not sure where the 52mm size came into effect?

You can get the Generic Pod filters in both ROUND and OVAL shaped from several online sources much cheaper than the OEM K&N brand ones!

With the Pods, you don't CAP OFF the vent tubes, you "T" them together and attach a filter on the end so they can VENT!!

The large black hose is the PVC vent, you can get a nifty chrome filter for it. I just routed mine down behind the engine, it's garage kept. The filter keeps critters and humidity out!

.. what's funny is that the two bikes that make the most power in these recent DYNO results have the stock air boxes on them.
but the indy filters do sound good

get in touch asap I'd like to get her back together. TC can you give me an idea where I can find the filters so
I can T the vent tubes and filter pvc vent.(chrome sounds nice) Should I use the old boots to make an extension for
air flow? or just clamp the filters to the carbs. I see I have a lot of searching to do as far as price is concerned on the indy filters I just went straight to K&N. So here's where I'm at T the vent tubes and filter them. Re route the pvc vent
and filter it. Clamp the indy filters on rejet and ride. Let me know how I'm doing here. Sounds simple enough but I have a way of making a weekend "project" out of the everything. That's where the stock airbox saves the day. I'll use the airbox to get her running and then when it's perfect I'll rip it out and start all over again with the indy's LOL but I'm learning and determined. Totally off the topic I purchased some petcocks from partsnmore they leaked allover the place sent them back. The nipple didn't fit either it was way to close to the carbs even tried it backwards way to close to the airbox. I then purchased a new set considerably more from motorcyclecarbs.com the manual petcocks. I capped off the vac nipples on the engine am I right in capping them off. You never know with me so I figured I'd ask. Anyone had any experience with these petcocks? I'll try and rebuild my stock ones if these don't work.

So, if best performance is with stock airbox, is that with the K&N filter or paper element? Also, referring to the re-jetting table, I shouldn't have to re-jet if I just added a K&N? Add one for the upgraded filter element, and then subtract one from the total?

Are the K&N regular filters a special order item from most places, or does anybody know a company that keeps them in stock?

Hi TC,
I went with the same uni's you have.
I found a guy who had them in stock out here.
They were on e bay and the guy was 5 minutes from me so I picked them up. Found the breather filters too. Got Scalded Dog sending me the air box just in case plus mine was crappy anyway. I'll let you know how everything works out.
