  • 82 XJ 1100 Popping out of 1st

Just started (only 15K on bike) making loud clunking noise going into 1st - and unless throttle babied pops out of 1st. No problems with other gears or clutch. Anybody know what gives? If so - how to on repair?

    Thanks.

Clunking noise is normal... popping not so. Check out the tech tips section - repairs.

PS: Have the same problem, but probbably different cause... I hope.

      1st gear malady, NO BULL!

      Hey OldBull,

Check out this and the other threads in the same section:
1st and 2nd gear Dremmel fix!

It seems like the later model XS's and XJ's seemed to loose 1st gear before 2nd! My 81 did, and 2 of the XJ's I worked on also had much more wear on the 1st gear dogs than the 2nd. My 2nd gear went just a few months after my 1st, so that's why I included BOTH in the fix, cause if 1st is starting to act up, 2nd isn't far behind, best to dress up both sets while you're in there!

Or you can order all four gears, 1st, 4th, 2nd, and 5th, at about $50.00 each from what I've heard recently!

Sorry for the bad news, but it is fixable!

        I can't remember where I read this.

To reduce the "clunk" when going from neutral to 1st gear pull the clutch in for a couple of seconds before shifting. This allows the gears to slow down a bit before the dogs engage.

1st gear is a big mutha and IIRC spins while the clutch is engaged and gearbox is in neutral. I do this on my Trike and the "clunk" is noticeably reduced.

I started doing this after having to rebuild my gearbox

Or you can get a complete Yamaha xs1100 transmission (used) from me for $35.00 including shipping in continental USA. All the spare parts you will need. Disassembled just enough to get the parts out of lower engine case, this will include everything related, like shift forks, shift drum, shift assembly, etc etc. Its the last big heavy box in my parts pile. andreas
