  • Need Carburator Help

I am re-building a set of 1978 xs 1100 carburators and I accidently put the starter assembly plungers into the carb cleaner. Well as you all know there went the little rubber pieces! So I am looking for the starter assembly plunger (part of the choke mechanism) for the 1978 xs1100e carburators, all 4 of them. If anyone can help out or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

There might be one from a different model that will work in Mike's XS website.
    Skids (Sid Hansen)

      Hello,
The price you might pay at MikesXS may be alot, and maybe the wrong ones. keep you eye on ebay for a set of carbs, they might be cheaper, and you'll get some spare parts. but no guarantee on the shape of em. Sounds like the olds ones are trashed. so flip a coin.

Try not to get too choked up!

        Hey there Dryder,

After some research you can see the list of parts #'s for various "starter plungers", starting with your machine, 78E, and then the various other 650's that are listed in Mike's XS, and the last one is for the 80-84 series 650 and you'll notice that it's the same # as for the 1100, and so it's a no brainer that it'll work for the 80-81 XS1100 carbs.

However....the78E's # is different!!! Now I just went and looked at the 79SF carbs I have, but they are all assembled, and didn't want to take them apart to investigate the plunger, but it IS the same shape as the newer model, and the appearance of the chamber it fits into appears to be the same, BUT I haven't actually taken the 80 plunger and tried to fit it into the 79carbs?

This plunger is the ONLY one that comes close to the 1100 that is shown on MikesXS! IT's not available on BikeBandit!!

They are a bit pricey at $12.00 each, an expensive experiment, but looks like about the only other option vs. EBAY and used set of carbs!?

Old model part on left, new model part on right:

The functional sections on each of the two units is the same. The difference is in the diameter and length of the shaft. The shaft is 4.58mm diameter on the older style versus 5.25 on the newer. This means the springs are a different diameter also, as well as the bore on the nut that holds the assembly together.

To stick a new style plunger into an old carb, you'd have to ream out the nut and find a larger diameter spring.

To stick an old style plunger in a new carb, you'd have a sloppy fitting at the nut, and the spring would be a bit sloppy too.

I'd want to know the pertinent dimensions of a replacement unit before plunking down some dollar$$.

Try motorcyclecarbs.com. They may have the correct plunger.

                Taking the Plung comparison!

                Hey Ken,

Xcellent work, thanks!! The New replacements should have the same dimensions as the NEWER MODEL, since they ARE the same part #'s Xsactly!!! Since the older ones are NOT available, I would think just reaming out the securing nut and getting a slightly larger spring would be the way to go! He wouldn't need to go back with the OLD style plungers! Again, AWESOME work!
