Rear brake shaft Standard vs. Special

Am I imagining things or is it true that the rear brake shaft on a Special is a bit (1" - 1-1/2") longer than that on a Standard?

Reason I'm asking is because I want to bring my pedal outboard just a smidgen to clear the exhaust (MAC). When I bite down hard the pedal contacts the pipe.

IIRC, the Special has a spacer or something between the bracket and the pedal. Is this because the bracket is different or the shaft is different?

The parts finder shows the brake pedal shaft for a ’79 F, part no, 2H7-27212-00-00, is also used on the E and G models.

The shaft for a ’79 SF, part no 3H3-27212-00-00, is also used on the H, SG and SH models.

My SG has a spacer, looks to be about 1” long, between the recess in the muffler/peg mount bracket, and the brake pedal.

So, it seems you recall correctly!

Without disassembling it, the pedal shaft on mine appears to be 4 5/8" long

Yes Randy. The special and standard have different shafts. One of them is longer.The chrome lever also have slightly different angles between special and standard. Not sure which is longer special or standard but they are different.

A Special rear brake pedal is closer to the frame/pipes than a Standard. When I was working on my buddy's SF, I had a problem with the pedal hitting the OEM mufflers. I replaced it with a Standard pedal, but it wouldn't 'clock' properly, but it did clear the mufflers. I ended up massaging the right side muffler mount at the foot peg bracket, and then the OEM pedal worked fine.. I have a spare Special rear brake bell crank if you need one. It came off a 79SF.
