  • What about xj bars can you change them?

My xj has the square stock bars, and right between my shoulder blades seems to get sore/strained after about 45 min.

Has anyone changed out the triple tree or something to switch these bars?

    Appreciate any comments you have.

    ?

xj if you take the stuff off the top tripple tree, you nwill see it looks like most other bikes. You will need like the riser parts and such, but i believe you can change them out..Thats just my observation i have not personally done it yet.

To use 7/8" round bars, you will need to change the top triple tree from any of the earlier specials, if your XJ has the axle in front of the lower legs. Or get a set of custom risers. The top of the XJ tree does not have the groove for the round bars, only two holes on each side where the splined pieces fit for the XJ bars. I would trade you top trees, except that I gave away my last special upper tree.

        xj11john,

dumb question - have you tried adjusting/repositioning the square bars. I have messed around repositioning mine and found that during the process there was quite a combination of positions to choose from. I personnally find mine quite comfortable.

Currently I have two triple trees in my parts pile but pretty sure they are for a standard model.I will check when I get home from work. I do not think the standard triple tree likes the special forks??? anybody know Also have a nice stock xs1100 1981 h (venturer tour model) handlebar factory black alot like the longhorn standard handlbar on the 78/79 standard.

The holes for the upper fork tubes are positioned farther forward on the special, as the axle is in front of the lower legs. My extra upper tree went to a sidecar man cause he wanted to decrease the trail, thus making it easier to steer with the sidecar attached. The complete front ends will interchange, but to put a standard upper tree on a special front end would put the wheel much farther forward, same as increasing the rake. Also the holes for the fork tubes in the trees are bored at the proper angle for each other. Mixing trees from the two models would put a bind on the tubes where they mount to the trees. Like 84XJ11 said, there is a lot of range for adjustment with the stock XJ bars. They can be adjusted at the upper tree splines, and at the other end of the riser part, where the round part of the bars begin. The range of adjustment is very broad, four places to reset. I put XJ bars on my 79 F just for this reason, and I will also be putting XJ bars on my 79 SF also.

              Hey John,
I repositioned mine and after a few tries, they are really comfortable. It literallly took moving both adjustments one click at a time and when I found the spot it was very apparent.

              Good Luck!

Well I will attempt again to re-adjust my bars, I moved them once at the ends just by moving it up abit, but that made the bike feel very unstable-hard to handle in the corners, I havent tried adjusting at the tree yet, but I'll give that a try.

If I'm unsucessful with that, does someone know and explain exactly what I need to change to round bars and where to get what I need. thanks.

Jimbo, the snow is melting fast here, I just may go out later today, and if not I will for sure tomorrow unless the temp really drops. If you decide to ride let me know, esp. Sun-Tues.

Thanks guys for the replys and all the help.
