Oil Leak

I've got oil leaking out from my cam chain tensioner bolt/locknut.
I tried to find a blown up view of this area to see if there is suppose to be a washer of some sort on the back side of the locknut. Has anyone had this problem before? Can I put some teflon tape on the threads? It doesn't gush out, but seeps out.

O-ring

I went to bike bandit and found a blown up view. It shows a o-ring. I'll replace the o-ring and it should stop the seeping.

I think there was an "O" ring on the bolt. I would try some of the thread sealer they sell for cars. It is a white sealer, good for coolant and oil.
You should be able to get the "O" ring from Yamaha, or you can try to get one that will work. Yamaha part # is: 93210-06001-00 O-RING (1.9-5.8) this last part is the size. 1.9mm thick, 5.8mm inside diameter.

I noticed the same thing on my 80 SG. It just sits there kinda seeping. I wasn't going to deal with it just yet but I'm glad you brought the subject up. Thanks.

I'll let you know this weekend if putting in a new o-ring solved the seeping.

Do a search for cam tensioner bolt, etc. There's several threads on this. Usually, the leak comes from around the plastic plug at the end of the tensioner housing. Most users pop the plug and seal it with RTV or equivalent.

My E was leaking from that area 2 years ago. I tried everything but it wouldn't stop. I realized it only leaked when the engine was running. Turned out it was leaking from the head gasket just below the tensioner and only leaked as oil ran down the inside of the engine as it returned to the oilpan from the valve area.
Black RTV smeared on the joint has worked so far (2 years now).
Guess I'll have to get a big-bore kit to fix the oil leak .

I replaced the o-ring on the cam tensioner bolt. Bought it from the local hardware store. No more seeping coming out the bolt. The old o-ring was hard. The bike is ready to ride. Actually rode it to work. Today's high is 58. So gotta get those rides in here and there.

All of the ones I had apart had a specialized rubber seal. I am glag you got the oring to work!

Yup... minwe seeps a little out of the plastic plug in the end. I was wondering about that myself. Sounds like a little RTV in my future. Thanks guys.
