It sounds like I am as mechanically inclined as you are Tim. I am in the process of trying to figure out what is wrong with my tach too. I have inherited my father’s 79 XS1100 SF. It was in pieces when I got it …no kidding. I had a local shop do the dirty work and get it back together and running. Now I am noticing little thing that I am trying to do myself, the tach being one of them. For some reason the fuel light will come on and the tach will jump back and forth to 1500 rpm’s or so but that is all. The mechanic said it was an “electrical tach” and he did not know what was wrong, anyone have any advice?

Ben, look at the Tech Tips. I know there was something in there or a thread about the tachs. The BIG thing is CLEAN ALL THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS!! The tach bicks up it's signal from the charging system. If you clean all the connectors, and put no-ox or dielectric grease on them after, you should stop all the problems.

        Ben,

What Ray advises. There is SO much information in this forum, in Tech Tips and previous posts. Read the tips first, then become familiar with the "Search" function. In this case, search for "tach" or "tachometer" and you will find dozens of threads on that subject. Same with any other topic, too.

I doubt there is any problem issue involving an XS 11 that hasn't been discussed previously!

Tim you'd be amazed at how much this forum can talk you through anything. All I'd ever done was change some oil, and last winter I had my tranny out and did the dremel fix. It worked perfectly, thanks to the great techs on this forum. Take the plunge, you can do more than you think you can with the support of this group.

I am pretty sure I will, I'll have to since I no longer trust the shop! I see myself starting, working for 5 minutes, then having to go email a question! oh well, never too old to learn, I guess!

Don't worry, Dr Tim, the worst that will happen is your keyboard will get a bit dirty. Oh, one other detail - if your computer is in the basement and you track into the house and up and down the stairs without taking your outside shoes off each time, SWMBO might get a bit testy.... JAT, BTDT, DAMHIKIJD, YMMV

                YMMV?

I was able to track down all your acronyms but YMMV... and I am guessing JAT means "just a thought"? Lots of fun!

PS no basement here, but I do have the bikes by the back door, and I could, if necessary, put the laptop on the outdoor workbench for quicker access!

PPS I forgot I have actually replaced a head gasket and the coils, after each the bike did run... so maybe there is hope...

                  "Ooh, those Latin lovers..."

(The good doctor throws in his Latin acronyms... hoping to stump the unwashed masses) Sorry Dr. Tim, but every mechanic knows Latin, Greek, and most have a passing knowledge of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, both from before and after the merging of the dynastys of Upper and Lower Nile
P.S. is the abbreviation of Post Scriptum (What is written after)
                  YMMV: Your mileage may vary.

I don't know much Latin, and a lot of things are Greek to me... I can say one thing for sure, though: I LOVE STAR TREK!!!

Just do what I did Jazzrat and set up a pc on your garage workbench. I've been working on my Eleven and posted a question and received an answer in 15 miutes. This forum is the best.
