79sf 160MPH speedo on 18 SH pigtail wiring?

Hello,
I am putting a 1979 xs1100sf 160mph speedo on my 1981 xs1100sh. The 79 has a 4 wire pigtail and the 81 has a 3 wire pigtail. Does anyone know hop to rewire this, and what is the extra wire used for?I hope someone can help, i have heard several Xsive's say they have done this speedo swap.

Yeah Bill, I have done it. Two of the wires need to be connected together on the 4-wire pigtail, one from the lights, and one from the speed counter (does the self cancelling signals).

I think they were both grounds . . . but I cannot remember at the moment.

As soon as I can get to my book I can tell you, but check the colors of the 4 wire connector, two of them are probably the same, and those are the ones . . . but I will check . . .

On your SH, are your 3 wires green/white, black, and blue?

On the 160 speedo, do you have green/white, blue, and TWO blacks? If so, connect the two blacks together, they are both ground. green/white goes to cancelling unit, blue is light power.

I recently swapped a 79 XS750 140mph speedo on my 80 XS1100 Midnight. There were 4 wires with bullet connectors coming out of the XS750 unit. 3 wire plug connector on my XS1100 unit. I opened the back cover on both and popped out both rubber mounted light bulbs and the self-cancelling pick-up. I just swapped the old ones from the Midnight into the new 140 speedo. Pretty simple job.
