Diaphram Needle

okay, so I am not too sure what I have managed to screw up, so I will let you guys have a crack at it. In the middle of doing the ol carb rebuild. Pulled out the diaphram, and pulled it apart, taking the needle and spring out for a cleaning.When I put it back together though, I can not get any movment from that needle once the little face plate is screwed down inside the diaphram. I checked out clymers, just to see if I might have messed up the order of the parts or something, but seriously the diagram sucks. has anyone ever experianced this problem...or have a better carb diagram, that i can check out...

Needle with its circlip goes down the hole first, spring sits over the top of the needle shaft, plate sits down top of spring, teeny screws hold plate in place.....

Now is the time to use a cutting torch right ken? I think that is how I have em set up, but I am going to triple check. Thanks bud

thanks for the diagram...bout as good as clymers...anyways you forgot to mention the little rubber o ring or whatever, that has a small little ("tit" for lack of better terms) that fits into the hole right beside where the needle goes through...line the tit up to the hole, and presto, I feel like an idiot for not noticing it in the first place, yet very happy that the online family is always there.

Diagrams, we don't need no steenkin' diagrams when we got photos:

Here's all the little bits, showing the plastic alignment nub (tit)


that needs to fit into the hole way down here


Put the washer on the end of the needle, then drop it down into the slide:


Add the spring:


Next come the tricky part - when you try to drop the plate on top of the spring and get the screws started without it all coming out of alignment.

I've found that a small magnetic pick-up tool works very well for this:


It will hold the screws in place, sticking through the plate as you lower the works down into the slide:


Finally, press down with the pick-up tool to compress the spring, and slide your screwdriver along next to the shaft to drive the screws:

Was wondering how to do this and...bidda boom... heres the answer.

One other carb question without starting another carb thread:

Can individual carbs be taken off the rack, cleaned and replaced before going onto the next carb? Don't want to mess up alignment or anything.

As soon as you remove one, you're going to mess up the alignment anyways, so I wouldn't worry too much. Of course, the choke rod has to come off first, but you can actually use it later to help get the carbs back into alignment when you start reassembly.
