stator removal

Went to take the right side cover off today for some polishing and the stator won't come out of the cover. All bolts are out. Any trick to this or is this not a good idea?
By the way, found what seems to be a real good easy to use polish called Wizard's metal polish! Anyone ever try it?

It comes out. Stick a phillips screwdriver in the screw hole(s) and wiggle it while pulling the stator out. Work around and it''ll come free.

Does that loose center section disconnect first or does it all come out at once? A little hard to tell doing it the first time.

It's probably too late, but you don't want to loosen the center 3 bolts of the alternator, just the outer edge bolts. The center stator coils should not be removed from the cover. They were positioned properly at the factory, and you might not get them back in the exact same location. This could lead to actual friction damage from the spinning flywheel rotor that spins around the coils, could short out the coils and damage them! The coils will come out with the cover without removing those bolts! Good Luck!

Yep, I already removed those center 3 screws. Looks like that center coil can't be refastened in anything other than the exact position it was in to begin with.

Still can't get the darn outer section out of the cover. It will rotate but for some reason it doesn't want to fall out of the cover!

What's the purpose of the gaskets on both the right and left crankcase covers? No fluids in there.

To keep moisture out?

I knew you'd get it, just takes time. BTW, when you re-install the coils, take care to route the field coil (center one) wiring tight to the cover or the rotor will eat through it.
