Why didn't I think of replacing those screws with allen head! I actually got some replacement phillips in metric at the local Lowes to replace the ones I stripped. I even picked up a screwdriver that fits under there so I could drop the float bowls and change main jets with the carbs still in the bike. Thanks for reminding me that Yamaha did not always think about long term maintenane when they built these.
For those who have yet to go through the joy of trying to work on a old set of carbs I suggest a 2 tool operation. A high quality screwdriver and a set of visegrips. The first 1/16 of a turn is the hardest.
