  • Its Making Me Crazy!!

Awwright guys, someone help me out before I go nuts .

I wrote down 5X10MM allen head to my to pick-up list.

Someone mentioned on a thread to replace the old ones with these but I didn't write down what they were for!!!

I tried searching but nothing came up. Tried looking at old posts but it would be summer again before I could find it that way.

    Thanks

Jack, 10mm allen heads(as in allen key size) don't exist on an XS. 6mm and 5mm cover the lot. 4mm for replacement bolts such as carbs and switchgear. 3mm for front manifold bands. There's a handful of actual 10mm diameter bolts, the two bolts holding up the rear fender come to mind, but 8mm and 6mm is the common bolt diameter all over. 5mm for the small ones.

Hmmm. Wonder if it was 5mm bolt, 10mm long? I could have written it down wrong. I've got the haynes, maybe they have bolt sizes listed...course it could have also been off the XJ list...maybe the CD? Mens room wall????? (getting old is hell)

5mm socket head screws 10mm long will let you get rid of all those %#$#$%% phillips screws holding the float bowls and covers on your carbs.

Thanks Ken.. That makes sense since I am in the process of doing my very first carb job on the XS, then the XJ, then the XJ750.

That should last me for awhile.

If you also pick up a box of 6mm socket head screws, 12mm long IIRC, you can replace the screws that mount the carb bodies to the carb rails.

thats all good info 2 know,
since i buggered half the heads of the bolts
holding the rails to the carbies, trying to get them apart.
              they all had been loktite.

Just did that to my "E" yesterday. Would have liked anodized black, but the "Screw Joint" only had stainless steel. Replaced all the bolts and acorn nuts on the triple tree with stainless when doing the steering bearings today. Wire wheeled the clamps and painted 'em black, buffed out the forklegs, and replaced all the rusted caliper hardware.

                    Phillips screws

When replacing the phillips screws on your carb covers dont overtighten the hex head screws; I overtightened one of mine and to add a nut below the bolt .......the friggin phillips screws get head strippage after a few carb jobs......

Piece of cake. It was not hard at all getting them out, thanks to all the fine folks on this forum.

I loosened the air box screws 2 turns, removed the bolts on both sides of the box and the one on the top, pulled all the various and sundry hoses, removed the throttle cable, slid the airbox back, tilted the carbs down, pulled back towards the airbox and they popped right out. To think I was scared crapless to even start this project.

Tonight going to pick up the replacement bolts for the carb bowls and frame. I have had enough excitement for one day.

Now I have to re-read the instructions for taking the bowls off. I don't plan on pulling the carbs off the rail unless I have to.

Thanks again to all of you for your help.

Jack, it's easy to get the bowls off. I pulled the carbs, installed new jets, and rechecked the float height in about two hours. I also replaced the exhaust system with a Kirker header, the reason for the new jets.
If you need any help, or tips, let me know.I can get up to your place in about 1 1/2 hours. If I start from work, it's only about 1 hour.

I pulled the bowls last night (on my coffee table) It was really easy. I just wanted to look inside to see what I am going to be dealing with, see if I can identify the various little parts and match them up with the Yamaha manual. The screws were a little stripped but I knew enough to have a good set of screwdrivers. They came out really nice, and the drainbolts on the bowls is a nice touch, easier to remove than screws.

I have ordered allens for all the carbs and racks since I couldn't find anything locally so will be waiting for them to arrive before I continue.

Everything looks real good inside the carbs, lots of orange gunk but looks like they will clean up real nice.

Anyway Ray, so far so good and I will remember your kind offer if I run into trouble.

                          Thanks,

There is actually an easier way than that.

It is possible to get the bowls out of the carbs without taking those out of the off the bike. This seems to work better when the Phillips bolts are replaced by Allen ones.
There seems to just enough space to remove bowls when they are in place, use the L-shaped allen key and the short end of that tool. This is very usefull with my SH where there is no set floater height, only the gas level is specified. I can make adjustments to float height and verify the change just by holding the bowl in place (even without the screws if needed).

                            Fast and dirty way...

If you can work on the jets that way, you are a better man than I. I tried it once and got frustrated. I decided that I would save time by doing things the usual way.
