    Hi all,

I'm bored on a Friday, so just thought i'd put up some pics of my bike. I've only had it a little while, just going through the process of getting it running right. It's a bit of a mix of parts. Like the standard fuel tank for example. It's an '81 RH anyway, originally. 5n5 serial numbers matching on frame and engine, so it's reasonably original.

Anyways, look forward to taking it for some decent rides this summer.

    Merry christmas.

    Antony.

          hey petejw

it has about 35k on the clock. from what i know, im the 3rd owner. 1st owner stored it for 15 years. 2nd owner was fixing it up (was a mechanic) to go around aus on, but bought a bmw instead. then along i come.

it's not running very well at the moment, a problem with richness. but im working on that and have parts en route. actually have a trip to melbourne planned once i get it up and running, before uni goes back, so might give you a yell? im pretty new to riding, having migrated to the road after herding cattle on an ag bike for about 7 years off and on, so can always use someone more experienced to show me where im going right and wrong.

as for the dual headlights, don07tncav, those were from the PO, and they've grown on me alot. look mean.

          cheers,

          winkel.

            Dual Lights...

I have to agree Wink, the dual head lights look nasty. Might try to do something similar on mine during the off season.

            Overall, really nice looking bike.

              hey winkel,
              youve done well,
mine had 98,000 on the clock, im sure i paid to much
4 it, $1400, but it went like the bat out of hell, till i got
              hold of it,
regarding the richness, check the float heights,
mine were so far out, way to high, very rich,
it makes all the difference. there an easy bike to
work on once you get the hang of things,
theres plenty help here, so ive discovered.
have fun with it and enjoy.

                New Developments

                Hi all,

Thought i wouldnt create a new thread, since this relates to my bike: Have started digging into the carbies and just have a couple of questions. Keep in mind that my bike was running incredibly rich. Stock mains and pilots are 110 & 40 respectively, and it was running 102.5 and 40 (from PO).

                Here are some pics:

So a few things interest me - why do the old pilot jets have no holes while the new ones i have got from Mike's XS have the three holes? It was suggested by some in this forum that faulty pilots caused my richness, but they seem to be ok size-wise? (by eye, i can see the dif. between 112.5 and 110 main jets i ordered...but the old and new pilots seem the same, or within one size)

Also, in the pics above, i have several end-on shots - these are of emulsion tubes (aka main nozzles - first 2 pics) and pilot air jet (3rd pic). Yamaha claimed these nozzles were badly worn, yet they seem ok? The air jet pic i threw in just because i was surprised at how large they are.

Float heights are on the rich side of standard, but i'm just waiting on the arrival of a set of calipers so i can measure them accurately.

Does anyone have any input into either the likelihood that the pilots are still at fault, or whether the main nozzles could be at fault?

                Thanks.

                  hey winkel,
my bike is exactly the same, running rich,
even with air leaks and pod filters,
my float levels were way to high,
i fixed that and still have the same richness problems,
check ur needle position on the diaphrams,
they make a big difference, mine is 1 up from middle,
to run leaner, it still runs rich,
with the pod filters, i used the cheaper ones,
has been stated on other threads, these filters can block
                  the air pilot jet,
my bike runs great from about 3000 up below that its
                  still running like a dog.
i bevelled the inside edges of the pod filters, this made
a good difference, but she is still running rich.
still havent figured it out yet, when and if i do
ill keep u posted, likewise if u figure out ur problem
                  let us know.

Don't you drop the needle to lean it? The needle meters fuel, not air, so the fatter part should stay in the jet longer to restrict fuel flow.

Wink, the pilot jets are no good without breathing holes. Too rich because not enough air is getting in. Ditch them. Stick in mikunis. Set the floats at 25mm. As we said before - ain't nothing wrong with the emulsion tubes. Your mechanics were all B.S.

Thanks Pggg, i was thinking the holes had that kind of function. I just wasnt sure, its a little tricky visualising all the passages inside the carbs. You know what would be handy, as well as the fische showing all the parts, a cutaway diagram so we could all see where fuel and air travel throughout the carbs, all those little passages. Well, it'd help me anyway.

Will let you know if the new pilots affect how its running, will do that on sunday, a little busy today.

Will leave fiddling with the needle for later.

Wink, set carbs as per factory specs and things should be sweet. As your carbs are the later type make that float setting 23mm rather than 25mm. Pilot air 180 or 185. Pilots 42.5 - 45. Mains 110 - 115. Needle in centre notch - although your later needles are most likely unadjustable without shimming anyway. I'd slap a washable metal mesh K&N filter in the airbox too.
