  • Another YICS Tool Question

    Hello Everyone.

Brand-stinkin-new here, so please bare with me. I just bought an '82 XJ1100 with a whopping 5,000 miles on it. (Sitting in an old man's shed.) It runs... put 200 miles on it when I finally got it running. I have 2 questions actually, but the first one is about the YICS tool listed in here. It says to use a 16 inch piece of all-thread,but is that sixteen inches then the 2 inch bend? Or 14 inches going into the bike, with 2 bent up? I went and got the stuff today so I can sync the carbs.
The other question is, I went to adjust the cam chain, and the tensioner rod is almost all the way into the motor. I have a service manual and did it by the book (Lined up the "C" and all on the timing) When I tightened the retaining screw, I think it is just BARELY catching it. Is the cam chain stretched or are the guides gone? I took the head cover off, and the top guide between the cams looks good, but I don't think thats the one getting all the action??
I did use the search on here and couldn't find the answer to my questions, so please be easy on the newbie... k?? lol. I have many more questions, but will wait till later.
    Thanks a bunch.

    Tod

With only 5,000 miles on the engine, it's very doubtful that there's anything wrong with the cam chain or the tensioner. I can imagine that the tensioner on a XJ is the same as one from an XS, but till I know for sure, I'll keep my mouth shut and wait for someone who's experienced with XJ innards to offer advice.

The innards are the same as an XS. I ran an XJ engine in my bike for years, before the big bore.

Approx 13.5 inches will be inside the motor, 16 inches will give you enough to make a bend.

          careful use of Yics tool

Be careful using the tool... When I was using mine over at 2Fasts house, the nylock nut and one of the washers came off inside the port. We got the nut out but not the washer. It doesn't have any where it can go now because we installed a piece of heavy wire the length of the port between the bolt and the closed end (if that makes sendse).

We ended up squeezing a rubber tube through the entire port and then synchronizing. Don't know if that's proper, but it seemed to run better afterward.

            tab1324,

What size tube did you use? I think I'll try your method.

            Thanks in advance.

I just bought everything on the list for making the YICS tool. I have been out of town for work and haven't had a chance to do it yet.. (Now the temp is going to be 8 degrees!) Grrr.. Anyway.. maybe by this weekend I can tell you how it went.

If you go to search and type in Homemade YICS You get a hit by GNEPIG. About halfway down the post, there's a link to Norm Kokes' Homemade YICS Tool I used everything from that list. I had to get 3 feet of the 6x32... only 12 inches or that in the all-thread. I got 1/4 " Inside diam copper tube and the only rubber tube the place had that was close, was 5/16ths Outside Diam windshield washer hose.... I am hoping this will work. I am still working on the valves and trying to get them shimmed up, so I haven't gotten to the Sync part yet, but I will post and let ya know when I get there.

My question for tab 1324 was what size hose could you just push through instead of making the tool. Sounds easier to me.
