    Thanks for the advice guys. I was wondering how to do a leakdown test. I'll do that this evening after the turkeyday festivities.

      I was doing a leakdown test on a Cessna and the prop slipped out of my hand spinning and smacking me on my hard head...LOL

      Leakdown tests do work if they don't kill you first..

        Had air both ways in different cylinders. It only took 40 lbs of pressure.

          I don't like to disagree with one of such stature as Randy, but if the rings are bad the smoke is pretty much constant, the cylinder pressure doesn't matter much, since the piston acts as a pump. With bad valve seals the manifold pressure at the intake guide is low during acceleration and does not draw oil through the guide, but when the carburator closes, the manifold vacumn drops a great deal and sucks the oil the has accumulated at the valve stem and causes a puff of smoke out the tail pipe.

            Dumb question

            Ok, so you say that you have air leaking out an intake on one cylinder and through the exhaust on another, Is that correct? Not knowing your mechanical prowess... let me pose a question. Were the cylinders tested at TDC on the compression stroke? Reason for asking is... had someone put #1 cylinder at top dead center to check it, then he checked the other cylinders. (He didn't set THEM to tdc... figuring that #1 was at tdc and that was how the test was done. Of course the other cylinders leaked)
            When you get the head off, lay it on it's side and pour some gas into each of the intake manifolds. You'll see if you have leaking valves. Then flip it and pour fuel into the exhaust ports and watch for fuel to leak past.

              I'll do that Randy. Thanks. I did make sure each was TDC when I did my test though!!
