Thinking back to the 1978 bike test magazine down here - 'Two Wheels' was the Australasian 'Cycle World' equivalent. They were finding it real hard to get good 1/4 times on the new XS11 because the rear wheel would just spin and smoke. The XS11 was laying 50 metre strips of rubber. Not getting power to ground like other 1 litre bikes of the day.

I'm picking Yamaha realised they'd made a BIG mistake with their backwards motor concept, so immediately dumped the failed idea and no reputable motorcycle manufacturer has ever attempted it to this day.

The 'more power to the ground' claims were in fact an underhanded dishonest and desperate ploy by Yamaha to flog off to the gullible motorcycling public as many of these worthless faulty machines as possible.

The XS11 is an imposter and earned the reputation as a powerful tyre smoker under false pretences.

All is not lost though, as through the goodness of my heart, I will organise distribution of a number of shipping containers, and for a reasonable* fee charged to the owners, I can quickly take all these useless good for nothing XS11's off your hands. Can't say fairer than that.

That may have happened because you are in the Southern Hemisphere. Ya know how water will flow down a drain in the opposite direction than it does in the Northern Hemisphere. ( I have tried this and found it to be true) Maybe you are experiencing the same thing with the direction of rotation of the XS engine. And no, I will not ship my bike to you.

According to the Cycle magazine test of the XS1100SF it is difficult to launch an XS11, they found it necessary to make a normal clutch start at the dragstrip rather than the traditional dragstrip start, the real acceleration started about 50 ft. out from the line and a tremendous top end rush made for a high trap speed. They got 1/4 mile times in the high 11s, 11.82 @ 115.38 mph for the XS1100E and 11.93 @ 113.62 for the XS1100SF. Their claim is that once they got the launch technique down all of their 1/4 mile times were under 12 seconds. Later (US) models were slower due to EPA mandated lean carburetion.

That the XS11 is slow off the line shows that it is actually faster in the real world than mere 1/4 mile standing-start times indicate.

XS1100SF "Rusty", runs great, 96k miles
XS650SJ "The Black Bike", engine from XS650H with 750cc big bore kit, 30k miles

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out and defiantly shouting, "WOW, what a ride !" - Sprung
