Sarcasm Fred, sarcasm. Still 35-40 mpg from an XS11 still beats the average car by quite a bit. My last tankful I got a whopping 42 miles per gallon (highway trip, twisty road and wicking it up). The XS650 gets 50 mpg and my 400 gets 65 mpg even when I flog it. My '87 Chrysler 5th Ave. (5.2L V8) gets 20 mpg. My money-pit Ford Tore-Ass (3L V6) got 22 mpg. That POS is now someone else's problem TTL. Don't ever buy one of those or a Mercury Disable. FORD=Fix Or Repair Daily or was that Found On Road Dead?

Try filling all the seats!
Your land yacht seats five in air-conditioned comfort for a seat-mile rate of 100mpg. This beats the XS1100's 86, ties the XS650 and is only beaten by the XS400's 130.
In my own case our 3.8 V6 Buick has a seat-mile rate of 125 which beats my XS1100 sidecar rig's 3 up 81.
Of course this only works with a full vehicle.
Going by one's self by all means take the bike.

I only take out the car if I absolutely have to. The bikes are my primary transport. When I lived in San Francisco I didn't even own a four-wheeled vehicle.

BTW a Chrysler M-body, while not really small, hardly falls into the category of a "land yacht". That's reserved for Lincoln Town Cars, huge SUVs and the like. Interestingly a Ford Taurus has a useful life of only 95,000 miles while a Chrysler M-body (5th Ave., Diplomat, Gran Fury, Caravelle) or F-body (Volare, Aspen) has a useful life of at least 300,000 miles. No wonder they discontinued this design for less durable models. By useful life I mean the mileage above which it becomes uneconomical to maintain the automobile. Actually if you rebuild the engine and suspension on an M or F-body (typically at around 300,000 miles)rather than replacing it with a newer model you could keep it going for a lifetime and probably would be ahead of the game money wise. When I say 300k miles I mean the 318 cu. in. V8 engine, I don't think the slant sixes last that long. I talk to my friends who have "modern fuel-efficient" autos and find that their repair costs eat up way more money than any savings they are realizing in fuel cost compared to my "old gas-guzzler".

Of course for sheer fuel efficiency the railroad train has everything beat. Nothing but nothing beats the steel wheel on the steel rail for ton/miles per gallon of fuel.

My XS only gets about 30 mpg. Runs great, idles good, lots a power and don't miss, but just getting it to run I have the pilot jets out just above 6 turns.

Been having so much fun ridding haven't wanted to remove carbs agin for a proper cleaning.

Noticed a little cam chain noise lately. Adjusted several times with no difference.

Did a little research and found skids post to jacksf about measuring cam chain tension adjuster. (if I was Italian, I would have a dent in my forehead now) I got NO adjustment left.

On my way to cycle salvage to pick up a valve cover gasket stopped by auto parts store and bought a can of "sea foam" (TopCat58 mentions it frequently) and poured some in the tank.

Will run this tank about empty then pull bike in to my shop for needed maintenance.

This time carbs come all the way apart and looks like I need a cam chain too
