  • standard verses special grab bar

Found a listing on ebay for a 1977 xs750D grab bar. I looked at yamahamotors.com parts fiche and the xs750D had a seat handle just like the 1978 xs1100E. The ebay grab bar looked just like what was shown for the 1980 xs1100G so I baught it. I thought it was incorrectly listed, but dosen't fit correctly. It might fit from the rear shocks to the rear turn signal mounts but it's supposed to fit from rear shocks to the rear crome fender mounts according to the drawing. I have looked at the microfiche for several year and models and found grab bars that look simular but the first 3 designation numbers of the part numbers don't match but the last 5 do match. The one I'm looking for is:
    1980 xs1100G rear stay (grab bar) p/n 3H5-21645-00-00
Will any other years/models work? Here is what I have found:
    1978 xs750SE rear stay p/n 2G2-21645-00-00
    1979 xs1100SF rear stay p/n 3H3-21645-00-00
    1980 xs850G rear stay p/n 3J3-21645-00-00

Is there a cross reference available for yamaha motorcycle parts?
Please any help would be appreciated.

    Hey Dan,

The parts #'s have the same root #, that just describes the type of part, the 1st three are the BIKE SPECIFIC designation when the part was first designed. SO...your list of parts are ALL DIFFERENT, cause they are for different models of bikes. Yamaha does use some parts on other bikes, but they keep the same part number as was for the first bike it was designed and made for.

Here is a "Links" link to a parts # matching site, which will allow you to put in a part number, and it'll tell you what other bikes that part was used on! Link to parts finder

The 80-81 G and H model grab rails should fit, but like you've found out, not the earlier models. Happy Hunting!

      Hi Dan,

The part number for the 'G' model grab rail isn't used on any other 'XS' model. The 'H' grab rail is a different part number.

I compared the microfiche side-by-side and the 'H' rail looks to have longer rear mounting tabs ie. the mounting looks narrower.

You can do this 'side-by-side' comparison yourself on my XS Part Number Finder website.

      Cheers,

Grab Bars Interchange Between Models ?

Here's a wider view of the grab bar interchangeability...

I compared the part numbers across all XS models (XS1100, 850, 750, 650, 500, 400, 2 and 1) to see if any other models would fit.

Conclusion: There isn't ANY grab rail interchange between XS models of a different cc. So a 750 grab rail would only fit 1 or more 750s, an 850 would only fit 1 or more 850s etc.

For the XS1100s the E & F share a grab rail, the SG & SH share one and the midnights. All the others are individual to that model.

For the hard of sleeping here's the full list of XS grab rails grouped by models.

            grab bar p/n

            Awsome response guys!

TopCatGR58 : Thanks for the link.

Limric : You did an awsome comparison. I didn't expect that! Thank you alot!

Losershoes: Thanks for the confirmation on that. The 79 special grab bar is what I'm looking at right now. Does it fit just like it is supposed to, or do you use different mount locations? Thnak you.

a side note I bought a grab rail off ebay for an xs 850 for my 81XS11SH. Beautiful shape, looked identical. Wrong... It was about an inch short from shock mount to rear mount. I don't do any model swapping now without asking here first

                Hi Dan,

Although Losershoes says the '79 Special (SF) grab bar will fit, they are different styles - that's why I don't show them as interchangeable in my list.

The SF grab bar only has two mounting points (the ones above the shocks) whereas a G has four (above the shocks and into the rear fender).

                Good luck.

Nope, the one I got has all four. If you look at the brochure pictures, the SF and G bars look identical.

My bike came without the grabbar, like most XS's that used that style do. They seem a bit fragile. Anyhow I have not seen a "real" G grabbar to compare it to. Just took an educated chance that it would fit and guess I got lucky. Unless it was mislabled and really for a G, but I don't think so as it was NOS and still had the original Yamaha sticker on it.

Don't know if the bar mounts are identical, but the frame has the correct mount points for it.

                    Hi Steve,

Maybe the Yammy microfiche diagram is wrong then.

Anyone with a 'G' model with original grab bar that can chime in here ?
