I have a round, probably special headlight on my 80 standard. The PO stripped off the windjammer and all the other plastic and converted it to that. I am trying to source a original headlight assembly. The question is, is the headlight a sealed beam unit, or can I replace the bulb in one if I find one online?

The 1978 was a sealed beam headlamp. I think they went to the replaceable bulb in 1980. All the bulbs will fit the headlamp housing. You should be able to find the newer style bulb and install it. If you do, try going LED, as they use a lot less energy, and save amps for other things on the bike.Ray Matteis

My '80G has a rectangular reflector unit running an H4 halogen bulb. Been using the higher wattage version giving me a 100W high beam. Don't forget, if you want to run an LED unit, you'll have to bypass the reserve lighting unit (RLU).
As stolen from a previous post:
"Any auto parts store will have the connectors needed. I'm going from memory, so keep that in mind. a short bit of 14AWG wire and two (I think) male 1/4" spade connectors should be all you need.
1. connect the 2 spade connectors with a 2" bit of wire - this is your jumper.
2. unplug the connector from the RLU, it's under the tank behind the voltage regulator.
3. connect the jumper to the Blue/Black (L/B) and Blue/Yellow (L/Y) wire connectors.
