  • Re-plating vs replacing fork tubes

I am going to change my fork oil when the weather finally kicks me off my bike. The tubes have some pitting fairly high up, out of the "normal" travel area. The left one leaks and the right either doesn't, or it is out of oil! (I have only had the bike a couple of months so I don't know which. They do seem to hold air pressure ok though.)

Question on the tubes: Re-plate, replace, or change seals and hope for the best?? Since I already have the seals I know hope easy and expensive that was. What I don't know is the ease or expense of the re-plate or replace options.

    Any clues.

Re: Re-plating vs replacing fork tubes

Hey if they hold air, they should hold oil! If the pitting really bothers you, it might be cheaper to replace the "stancion tubes"(?) than have them plated. Forks-by-Frank? Do a search on this web site to get the info.

I bought a set from FBF for my XJ1100. Cost $227 and well worth it. Replating would have cost about $175 with no guarantee of duribility. They look great.

There are some used ones on eBay right now for $130.

          Link (Maybe)

If the link does not work then search for item number 6579795372.

The pics suck but maybe they will take a better picture for you so you can tell if they are better than yours. Can't hurt to ask them.

Thanks, I might ask them about a better pic. I didn't realize the XS came with the curved spokes on the wheel. Looks like my XJ.

Hmmmm... I should have looked at the pic and not just the description. I just looked and thought "hey that pic is really ****ty." I didn't pay attention to the fact that it is not an XS. Good catch.
