  • Turn Signal Problem

I have a bike that has healthy turn signals on the left but on the right the front won't turn on and the rear turns on but does not blink.

I have tried a new bulb, checked the socket for corrosion, disconnected the flasher cancelling unit, checked with a multi-meter and get 12.7 on the left and 15.7 on the right. I have also tried to bypass the original ground with no success.

Do I just have a bad turn signal unit or maybe I need a new relay. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try cleaning the switch on the handlebars. Mine did the same thing until I took it apart and sprayed it out.

What do you recommend for cleaning?

Sometimes you can get away with blasting dirty switches with a spray of "electronic contact and control cleaner" or a similar product. More often, you will need to take the problem switch apart and mechanically clean out the corrosion using fine sandpaper, scrapers, or fine picks.

Before you get too involved, you'll want to a bit of searching through this site for tech articles on this. There is lots to read, and this article is just one sample. In particular, be careful when you start taking things apart because you will run into small springs and ball bearings as well as fragile soldered connections.

If you work your way from one end of the bike to the other, taking your time to methodically check, clean, and test every last connector and switch, your electrical problems will go away.

The turn signal switch on the handlebar is where the blinker is routed to the left or right bulbs, if one side works, the flasher unit is ok. The switch is most likely your problem, could be a pinched wire or the connector going to the signals need to be cleaned.
