Hello all. It has been several years since I posted here on the forum but I still have my sweet old SF. Glad to see the forum is still going strong.
A few years ago I had a totally dead ignition system. After a bunch of looking and talking I was directed to an outfit called C5 Performance. They sold a complete optically triggered ignition system from parts made by PowerArc.com. Well C5 is out of business but PowerArc.com still makes all the parts. Installing the system is a breeze. No more pickup coils or spark advance modules or setting timing anymore. The heart of the system fits in place of the old ignition system. In fact, the instructions tell you to remove ALL factory ignition parts. The heart of the system is the optical ignition module and an encoder disk. The encoder disk measures crankshaft position every two degrees so it important you set TDC accurately when installing this system. Installation takes about an hour or two and I am telling you I have never been happier with the way my machine runs. With the system you MUST use their MC-2 ignition coils as they have a built-in micro switch which powers the coils up upon the first trigger signal. You MUST also use resistor spark plug wires AND resistor spark plugs. Their instructions say to wire the coils direct to the battery but I do have mine running through the original switched circuit.
I read a few posts before I wrote this and I see where even now, members are trying to tune out the low-speed stumble with their carbs but installing this ignition system got rid of all the stumble. It is available with an optional four-position switch for four different spark curves but I find the standard curve works well.
thanks and it is good to be back !
