  • I got to ride my 79 Special :D

Did an oil change today, I started it a couple days ago and found there was no oil filter installed! The spring and washer were also missing, so I had to wait a few days for those to come in. The bike cranked up with just a few attempts First time she's ran since the late 80s or early 90s. It rides really well, but unfortunately has the 2nd gear problem that I've subsequently read about on these forums. The petcocks also leak a little bit, so I'll need to address that. If I skip second gear I can ride it around just fine. I reckon I'll be splitting the cases at some point and doing the ol dremel and washer swap fix. I've got a CB550 engine apart on the bench at the moment so this guy may be a while. For now I'm just going to run it as is and skip 2nd gear.

No need to split the cases to fix the tranny.

    Do a search.

You can flip the bike upside down and get it done through the oil pan opening. A few guys have even done it without flipping the bike over.

Well that's good to know. Hopefully I can just lift the front end up with a hoist and do it from underneath. As heavy as these are I don't know that I could get it upside down lol.

We did Special Ed's machine in my garage a few years ago. Hoisted up the front as high as possible, and had it done in one day. I had a LOT of help from 3phase and I think Roo, it's been a while and I am getting older....
If you flip it upside down, it IS easier to do the fix, as the parts fall into place a little better. I've done it three times now.

I've done many, probably 10 or so over the years with jack stands under the aluminum rear foot peg brackets. Take the center stand off if it seems to be in the way.

Sure looks do-able according to the photos..... (☉_☉)

AND it looks like you don't gotta deal wit the #1 complaint most new owners present-

Pulling off/Putting back on the OEM Airbox. \(^_^)/

Oh I've been through the airbox fight already... I ended up using a ratchet strap and a couple small pry bars to get it on lol
