  • Clutch Issue

I've wrote about this before, but I'll try again:

Got an interesting issue with the clutch. I use the bike to teach MSF classes every now & then. In the box, I drag the clutch pretty good, and def got it hot last year. I pulled the clutch basket this morning, and cleaned the steels, and measured the fibers. All at 3mm. No warpage on the steels. Filed the basket edges, and put it all back together. Adjusted the throwout bearing, per the manual. Anywho, in the driveway, same issue as last Fall: as I pull the clutch in, and rev it slightly, you can feel the pressure in the clutch disappear (almost like it loses hydraulic pressure). The other issue is it's hard to downshift (upshifts fine). Here are my thoughts: the fibers may be in spec, but they're burned up, and not providing grab (they're very dark in color). Or, despite adjusting the TOB per the manual, it's really not adjusted correctly. Thoughts?

When I had the basket apart, I was tempted to lube the cable, but it seemed to slide in the cable housing very well. It's a nice MP cable.

Plates, and probably more so springs are the issue. Replace the springs with Barnett springs. DO NOT use any other spring! You will have a "heavy" pull on the clutch, but not that much above stock. Friction plates should be stock, as they seem to last longer than the "other brands", IMHO.

The quality of the China made MP cables has suffered. I've had a couple fail at the engine side, the ferrule broke off. And that is with Standard duty clutch springs. The cables that are made in Taiwan seem to be much better. YMMV

These are Barnett HD springs. Probs less that 10 years old.

The downshift hard thing is classic clutch plates not separating. It sounds like it could be a problem in the release mechanism. Maybe catching a burr.

I ordered new springs and frictions, and I'll order a new cable today.

Update: Good to go. New lubed cable, steels, frictions, steels and springs. Feels like a hydraulic clutch.

Springs are only good for about 5 to 8 years. They are compressed most of the time, and it will cause them to fail after a while. Same thing with suspension springs on bikes and cars.

True. Valve springs also. I used Vesrah clutch springs when I built my bike. They work great even with the added load of a heavy sidecar.
