  • How to price project bike?

    Hi all,
I am a long time lurker as I have schemed/planned what to do with this bike.

My brother-in-law gave me a 1980 XS100G (Standard) that had been sitting in his garage for 2 years. Before that, the original owner had it sitting in his shed for 20 years.

The tank and pipes were rusted out but everything else just seems filthy with a little surface rust. Of course, I had "grand plans" to fix the old girl up and have her running again. I have come to the realization that I would rather ride than wrench. This is what happend to my bro-in-law too as he needed the room in his garage for his newish V-Star.

kbb.com's "Trade-In Value (Good Condition)" shows $855. The bike has 24k miles. It is a fully dressed version (I prefer nekkid m yself) with a back rest and an extra (very 70's looking) NOS sissy bar.

My question is, what should I ask for her on my local craigslist (Austin, TX)?

It is complete so it seems a shame to part her out but I guess I could do that.

I also have a "new in box" set of Mac pipes for it. Should I just ebay those?

I can try to post pix tonight when I get home.

        I have a clear title.

I swear I'm not trying to post a For Sale ad in the main area, just looking for some pricing help.

One way to price the bike is to work backward...what will it take to put the bike into rideable condition?

From several "what is it worth" threads, a good running and street ready XS11 in average to good condition has a market value of $1k - 1.5K.

Your bike is looking at tires, carb clean/service, probably fuse block replacement, gas tank, battery, and probably brake work to get it to the point where it would compete with running XSs on the market. Figure roughly $700 - $800 and quite a bit of labor on your part.

To some people, including me, a fully dressed unit is worth quite a bit more than a nekked version. Typically a Vetter system, with bags, lowers, trunk, fairing, brakets and wiring is worth $300 - $500 (perhaps more, depending on Vetter model and condition) by itself.

My guess...if you get $600 - $800 (with the Mac exhaust) you would be doing well, mostly due to the accessories.

You might check with the previous owners about the condition of the transmission. If there is any mention of 'skip' you can knock a couple hundred off the price.

In short, a non-running XS doesn't have much market value, much less one that needs hard to find parts and a lot of TLC to get running. It may be worth more as parts, but before you go that route post here to the list, as many would like to keep as many XSs on the road and out of the boneyard as possible and may give you a reasonable, though low-end, offer.

Thanks to all for the responses to my question.

webbcraft2150 and I are going to meet up this weekend so he can gvie the old girl a look.

I've had several questions about the new pipes but I am going to wait until I talk to webbcraft2150 to decide what to do with them.
