On the old Yamaha E.G.A. machine I've been using when the bikes cylinder is to lean the Hydrocarbons would raise higher on the scale.

The idle should be about 1,000 rpm, +/- 100 rpm. If your floats are a little high, the idle will not help. If the idle is at 1300 now, it may do the trick.

In my oversimplified mind, what Winterhawk indicates makes sense. Maybe this is why Yamaha used larger main jets (120) in carbs 2 & 3 instead of the 110's in carbs 1 & 4 in 1980?

As a follow-up, this past weekend I took the warmed up idle from around 1400 to 1000 rpm. This did the trick and I passed, the CO by .09%. The interesting thing is that my Hycrocarbons about tripled.

          Here are the numbers:

          Test 1 HC: 408 ppm CO: 6.14%
          Test 2 HC: 395 ppm CO: 5.91%
          Test 3 HC: 1276 ppm CO: 5.41%

Passing is HC: 1800 ppm CO: 5.50%

The difference between test 1 and 2 are new plugs and the dry tank. The difference between 2 and 3 is taking the idle down to 1k. Dang does it run like crap cold though...

Anywho, I passed and that's the important thing, now to get my registration and plate to make myself an official XS 1100 owner.

Thanks again for all the help

            Smog test

Is the motorcycle smog test in AZ a one time test or do you have to retest every two years (cars/trucks) like CA?

            Thanks,

            Big Pat

The whole scam is a joke. It's just another way for the state to raise taxes. This one is just called an "emissions" tax.

Hmm lets see concerning motor vehicles there is sales tax...fuel tax...excise tax...registration tax....licensing tax...and oh yes...the biggest scam of all...

              SPEED TAX!

I'm not sure how it works actually, but I think it has something to do with when the vehicle is first titled in the state. The guy at the DMV said something about having to test again in June. After that, I believe it is once a year or 2 years. My truck though is a 1999 and I have never had to have it tested.

                  Raising this from the grave...

Are there actual carb tuning figures for these?

Not for pass/fail but from Yamaha?

                  CO
                  HC

                  O2 ?

Just loaned a CO analyser and trying to figure where to set these? Well the CO anyway...

Looking from the microfiche I just remembered owning...

It seems that the CO should be set to 2.0% at 1100rpm (BS34-III / 3J6-00)

                    Max CO is 3.0%
                    Max HC is 500ppm

                      Passing emmissions test

                      Hey Repper,
I was browsing the Berryman products website looking for information on their carbs cleaning products and found this:

Reduces Hydrocarbon (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Nitrous Oxide (NOX) emissions. Improves fuel stability, fuel economy, and driveability. Protects against fuel system corrosion in leaded or unleaded gasoline engines.

This is the link (it's halfway down the page):

Good luck, hate to see an XS sideline for that kind of stuff, not to mention the XSessive who owns it.
