Hi MarchHare,,,,sounds like the common second gear xs1100 worn gear issue. Do a search for second gear fix and read up a bit. Maybe try the clutch adjustment at both ends of the clutch cable, down by the clutch and also at the top at the handle,,the procedure is in the manual or in the search area,,,, ,,,also try new 20/ 50 oil,,,,if your oil is mixed with gas, common with carbs leaking into the oil,,,, that causes the oil to thin out, that definately affects gear shifting. Worst case, its fixable by the second gear bevel grind fix if needed, but that requires some time. Keep us informed,,,the xs shifts like a tank, so hard shifts are common and oil, adjustment can smooth it out somewhat....Mike in San DIego and Pa.

It's good news that it doesn't slip. It points to shift linkage or shift fork.

I'd check the shift linkage first. You can remove the cover behind the shift lever and watch the linkage as you shift up and down through the gears. Also check the dots line up properly as shown in the service manual. Examine the star wheel and associated parts.
