Busy swapping over to a V-Max automatic tensioner on my '79SF. Probably a stupid question but is it OK to use the old mounting bolts or do I need to get V-Max mounting bolts? Are they different? Am I just over thinking it?

Original bolts are 25mm long, you will need 20mm long for the VMax tensioner. Or worst case, use a stack of washers on the old bolts.
Make sure your bike is on the center stand, not the side stand when removing the old tensioner, otherwise the chain could possibly slip off the crankshaft.Last edited by bikerphil; 10-10-2023, 06:16 AM.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Thank you. I don't have original bolts with the tensioner I bought and the old ones have felt too long. I didn't want to risk over-tightening them. Now I know why!Comment

If you have a dremel or grinder with a cutoff disc you can cut your original bolts down to the right size. Just run them in with the automatic tensioner, mark them for excess and cut that amount off.2 - 80 LGs bought one new
