Anyone know of a good method for removing these races? My 79F has over 200K miles on it, the service interval has finally arrived.

Swingarm Bearing Race

Hi Phil, I have removed similar Moto Guzzi shaft drive swing arm bearings by taking a thick strip of steel and welding it to the inside of the race. The strip of steel is drilled in the center and tapped for a bolt. The welding heats the race. You thread in the bolt in the center and carefully tighten it until the race pops out. Freeze the new race and heat the seat of the swing arm with a propane torch to install the new part.

That sounds like a great idea. I got the driveshaft side out with a bolt and a 35MM OD washer on the inside to pull the race most of the way out, plenty of access on that side, no inside access on the right side.
Thanks, I'll give your method a try.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Well, I got the race out. Tried welding the steel strip in there but I didn't do the best job and it broke off when tightening the bolt. I was able to drive it out from the other side with a long extra rear motor mount bolt. I think the heat probably helped loosen it up some so all is good. The weld penetrated the steel strip nicely but the race not so much.Last edited by bikerphil; 07-30-2023, 03:58 PM.2H7 (79) owned since '89

I know it is too late this time, but next time simply run a bead of weld on the face of the race. Then allow to cool and the race will literally come out with your fingers.

I was hesitant about welding in that confined area too much, my skills suck. I ended up grinding slag out of there anyway. I pretty much welded the race into the swing arm.2H7 (79) owned since '89
