So I’m trying to figure out the wiring of the left handlebar switch. Specifically why there are 11 wires that go up to it. I have been looking at the wiring diagram and for things like the high beam switch it looks like two circuits are closed which confuses me. And for the turn signal switch on the diagram there’s a L and a L-N and I’m not sure what that is but it is 3 different circuits in those two switch positions. The hazard also has three wires and I expected a 2 wire switch. What I’m getting at is that I’m replacing the switch. I’m getting rid of the reserve lighting unit and the auto cancel unit and trying to get the least amount of wires needed to get it all to work on a smaller simple-looking universal switch. I’ll leave some photos of the diagram and my project so far.

Hi Patrick, although my bike is a 78 "E" model and has different controls than what looks like your 80/81 control, I sourced a couple of new XS Yamaha controls and spliced in my control plugs by mapping out the circuits on paper. I also removed the self cancel & reserve headlight circuits.

When mapping your switches I recommend not using the service manual "chart". Use a multimeter and start with the power wire into the switch (usually yellow/red or red) and measure all the output wires using the switches in an on/off motion to determine what color wire does what function and write it all down. Some wires can control ground output to activate a certain circuit such as horn or starter solenoid. Be advised you can alter these "sinking" or "sourcing" signals by soldering the wires or switches any way you would like them. Take many notes and draw it all out.
