  • squeak sound

My 80 SG is running fine-probably the best it has ever ran in quite a while. The carbs were thoroughly cleaned over the winter, and it shows everytime I start the bike. I dont have to touch anything and it idles nice. When i shut off the bike using the key I get a slight squeak sound. If I shut off the bike using the emergency stop switch no squeak sound. What causes this? Maybe a small squeak sound at idle but lasts for a second or two then disappears. Oil level is fine-maybe could use a change Any thoughts?

Didn't you just install that V-Max tensioner? Maybe it's too tight.

Can you be more specific as to where you are hearing the sound?

Coming from underneath the tank-when I rev the engine goes away. Doesnt happen all the time-could the cam chain be loose?

I'm wondering if it isn't the starter clutch, mine did that on my Goldwing before I rebuilt to starter clutch.

I haven't experienced this personally because I always eliminate the octy. But I've read that the vacuum controlled fuel petcocks can make squeaking sounds from the pulsating vacuum.

Does the starter clutch on these go bad? Never have heard this. Maybe I should change the oil as its been a while. I dont hear this noise while in gear.

Haven't done it on an XS, not much to it though once you get to the clutch. On the Goldwing the starter normally disengages when the engine starts and the RPM's go up. On mine it was sludged up and would re-engage when the engine was shutting down making a chirp sound with just a tad of a "whine" to it.
