  • did I change the oil wrong?

feels like a dumb one...been 2000 mi since oil change and glass window looks too clean and too full

    what could be wrong?

The level is probably over the sight glass.

Maybe the engine needs to turn over enough to fill the oil filter?

If you think the crankcase is over full then maybe the carbs are leaking.

It doesn't take much oil to go from "empty" to the fill line on the sides of the sight glass, about 8oz would do it. If it's low you'll be able to see oil going down past the glass as you fill it and it only takes an oz or two to see that happening. If you're overfull just open the drain plug enough to let the oil trickle out into a pan until you got the right level. I've overfilled by not paying attention to that last little bit in the third quart while filling and added most of a fourth before draining it, stuff happens.

And always try to keep the bike level when you fill it. I did that last year not paying attention. I used a siphon pump I bought at AutoZone.

stick your nose in the oil filler cap and see if you can smell fuel.

Good advice Tony- or put a stick inside and pull it out and light it. If it lights easy, fuel is in the oil. Dont start the bike if it is like this.

Smells like oil. Good to go.

I did change from 10- 40 to 20- 50 and got a hi flo filter and overfilled.

I am admitting I was wrong. The oil was under filled. The window was too clean cause it was empty. The level has been under the glass for 3000 mi. Gallon instead of quarts confused me.

I feel so dumb. Bike seems okay and has fresh oil at the right level now.

I think it is an additive for turbocharged engines to keep carbon deposits from forming. It shouldn't have any ill effects on our engines.
