Well... Looks like I missed all kinds of excitement... I was 1981XS on the old site (.com) and then I met a girl, got damn near killed by a piece of heavy equipment, had a kid, started my own independent shop... Girl liked the bikes, Didn't trust myself to ride with as much as things hurt and then kids seats just don't fit well. So the bike sat, and sat and got moved back and forth. I pulled it out here a few weeks ago and charged the battery up, started it and went for a little ride, but noticed my lights were dim, checked voltage and it was not charging. Pulled everything apart, opened up harnesses checked connections, fixed connections and it still wouldn't charge, checked voltages at regulator, green to black 2.25 volts with engine off and steady with engine on, brown to black battery voltage, ordered a new regulator, put it on, discovered battery was dead again charged and ran still no charging. Decided to buy a new battery because well if the battery sucks the charging system will too. Put the new battery in today, charges about 13 volts at 2500 rpm, battery voltage at idle. Checked the regulator, same measurements checked the field coil and stator right on the nuts with specs..... Anybody seen this before? Manual is pretty clear less than 1.8 volts between black and green with bike off, gradually increasing to 9-11 bike running and revving.

Try looking at ALL the ground connections! Clean the battery to frame, and frame to engine connections, putting some antiseize on them. Then check rest of the ground connections, cleaning and putting on antiseize. Also, if you still have the old glass fuses, that could very well be part of the problem. As a test, jumper a wire between the connections on each side of the main fuse. Jump at the wire to clip point, start the bike and re-check the voltages. The fuse holders may be too old, and not making a good connection anymore.Ray Matteis

Just went through my charging system about six weeks ago, it turned out my stator was bad BUT cleaning up the grounding points as previously mentioned got me from an "OK" charging system up to "excellent" By all means, clean up those grounds before shelling out more cash for parts!1980 XS1100G
I identify as a man but according to the label on a package of Stauffers Baked Lasagne I'm actually a family of four!
