The snorkel's are designed to speed up the air flow to assist in atomizing the fuel.
The air box is designed to give the carbs a direct balanced helping of the accelerated flow.
IMHO pods would work well with an extended venturi on each carb, for drag racing and quick jaunts around town but on long distance high sustained speed runs where you may be operating in conditions with alot of road dirt, rain or morning dew pods may suffer a bit of breathability being open to the elements.
Pods sound great and run well if done correctly, but would most likely need more maintenance than the stock air box.

    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Here's how I see it. If you're running the revs up and NEED lots of air then modifying the air box might make sense, truth is though that for average everyday riding you probably aren't running the engine very hard at all. The folks that designed the intake system have WAY more experience at building a working machine than the majority of the rest of us do, what do you know that they don't?
