  • issues while riding

So, I have ridden the bike up and down the road in front of my mom's house many times before. The road is not even a 1/4 mile long and has a speed limit of 25mph which I never exceed. I took it out for a longer ride and noticed when I shifted it was around 3500 and 4000 rpms each time. I rode back to my mom's garage, and the revs in neutral was around 3000 rpms looking at the tachometer. I shut off the bike and when I started it again it settled down. I did not do a bench sync the last 2 times the carbs were taken off. I decided that it had to be done. I took off the carbs and did the bread tie sync which has worked well in the past. I looked at the instructions but didn't follow them as they were written. Putting the carbs back on the bike, it somewhat idled fine but when the bike really warmed up the idle would climb and climb. No adjustment would correct it. I took off the carbs again and redid the bread tie sync looking very carefully at the instructions. I completely screwed them up the first time. Hopefully I did it right the second time. I will know tomorrow.

You will also need to do a real, vacuum sync on the carbs. Bread tie sync is just to get you close!

I don't have gauges. Bread tie has worked in the past. -I guess I should buy a set. Neuropathy in legs bad so don't know how much longer I can work.

Instead of bread tie you can also set them visually, just set each butterfly so you can only see 1/2 of the hole on the top of the carb throat. Start with carb #3 turning the main idle thumbscrew, then the other 3 with the sync screws.

I would make sure the throttle cable is not hanging up on the boot clamp. The clamps should be positioned with the screw below the boot, if it is on top it can hang up the cable.

Phil... that is exactly what I do. Of course I follow that up with an actual synch on the bike with my gauges.

Idle that climbs when hot can be a sign of a vacuum leak.

Most likely places would be the intake rubber boots or the butterfly shaft seal(s)

You might try holding an unlit propane torch on those areas to see if it affects the idle. Lighter fluid or starter fluid can also be used, but be careful not to start a fire.

I messed up the bread tie sync by not adjusting the main idle screw 1st. I used the adjustment screw between 3 and 4. When I redid the sync, I followed instructions word from word.

Agreed, check the boots as well as the connection to the airbox!

LAB3 No airbox just a big K&N filter -Well, I did the bench sync over and checked it 3 times. I put the carbs back on the bike and started it up. After the bike warmed up, I blipped the throttle, the revs climbed. I shut off the bike and lowered the idle speed screw. I blipped the throttle and the idle came down, I repeated this and lowered the idle even more and now the throttle behaves like it is supposed to and doesn't climb. I will take it for a ride tomorrow to check my progress.

Didn't pay attention to your signature, switching to pod air filters requires a lot of love to get them tuned in. I've never used them but a lot of folks speak highly of this outfit to get the right jets that allow you to best tune for them, you're WAY leaner than you once where! https://www.dynojet.com/

Well aware of dynojet as they have been installed in the bike since around 1988.Pods make it so much easier to work on the carbs. My current setup I remove 2 fuel lines and can remove the carbs in maybe 5 minutes.

I think I got it sorted out-Did a float height check on #4 carb-was off and put the carbs back on the bike. Started up and idle stays put. Going to put the seat back on and ride it.

If you know someone close enough to you that has a set of gauges you would benefit from synching those carbs. Close is no where near as good as actually synched.

My boss synced them last night at work as he had a set of gauges. He said he barely had to make any adjustments. Minor ones if that. Now I can't really take the bike to work as people like to sit on it and that bothers me greatly.

Make up a nice looking "please do not sit on this motorcycle" sign and keep it at work. Make the sign two sided, and have a 4" bit of cardboard for the bottom. Set the sign on the seat when you park the bike.
