  • K&L pilot jets and idle speed

I just rebuilt my carbs on my 79SF and I used the dreaded K&L pilot jets. It ran like a dog off idle so I put the old pilots back in it. Will the K&L pilots make the bike idle high or did I have the butterflies open too much? I tried to sync it with the twist tie wire. I haven't reassembled it yet.

The bread tie pre-sysc will makle the idle way high - the buttterflies are open way too much. Use the idle speed adjustment between #2 and #3 to lower the idle back to around 1000 or so.

Thanks Ken. I'll put it back together tonight and see what happens. It sure has plenty of power now when you open it up. With the K&L pilots in there it reminded me of the powerband that my '76 YZ 125 had. Pretty scarey.

I put the stock pilots back in and it runs good off the bottom but it is blubbering some from midrange up. Are the K&L needles any good? It wants to idle fast at times and it seems to be running rich now. The exhaust is strong like it is getting too much gas. Should I go back to the stock needles?

hey Ed, i would love to take you up on your offer of meeting up at the Croom but i sold my last dirt bike 2 years ago, no place to ride around here any more.. i've been missing off roading somthing bad lately and been keeping a half of an eye open for somthing cool and old to ride like a 73 ct175 i had once, it wasn't the biggest or the fastest but it was just fun

.. yes to putting the stock needles back in, i have never seen a set wear out on this style carb and if you put the knl main jets in replace them with the stock ones also [after you've cleaned them of course].. knl's carb parts seem to be made on mars so there measurements are all over the place and not the same as mikiuni's, i have noticed they are very cheap and inconsistantly made
.. let us know your out come
