  • Charging system

Just a quick question. I've seen several remarks refering to a way to improve the charging system. But at my age (64) it's hard to remember anything. Can somebody help me out here.

By the way this is a great site. I don't know that I would be where I am on that bike if it wasn't for all of you.
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all of you.

Thanx for the plug. The first thing I will tell anybody that is looking for more charging power, is “are you sure you're getting all that it was designed to give?”

Clean all the terminals, especially the ignition switch plug and all the ones in the charging system and coat them with dielectric grease before plugging them back together. It’s amazing how much charging you can loose in the connections. BTW, it's a good idea to do this to every electrical connection in the whole bike. It takes time and a about $3 worth of supplies but you only have to do it once.

If after that you need more charging output. Especially at lower speeds (under 4K RPM,) then one of my reg/rec units will help you.

        Thanks Geezer
I told you at my age it's tough to remember. I'll put that idea
to work. will check back after.

Thanks to Geezer repeating this procedure pertaining to the stock charging system, I did it on mine, which was already working well, with a normal voltage drop at idle. Now at just 200rpm above idle speed it is all working at it's proper ouput. (Takes repetition hearing it, before I take the hint) Is that age, or stuberness Geezer?

Like everything else, I learnt it the hard way.

I also repeat it a lot because most people seem to think I'm selling them snake oil or it's too easy to work. I'm not selling anything in this case, I don't make a dime on this fix.

I understand the too easy to work thing but I've often found that if I do the easy stuff first, I don't have to do the hard stuff later.

So, back to the original question on more electrical power, how much does the XS have? Or asked another way, how many amps or watts does the system generate at highway speeds and how much is consumed by the standard equipment? I've been taking the bike on longer trips and my problem is that conditions change over the course of the ride. I have an electric vest and an extra set of halogens up front. I have not run into trouble yet, but I shut them both off at lower speed (rpm) and try to not have them both on at the same time. I have colder weather riding gear, but the vest lets me deal with the large temp drops without needing mulitple sets of gear on a single ride.

Charging at idle is in part a function of RPM. Given a 1000 RPM idle with an all stock charging system and you will be lucky to be getting more than battery voltage.

Charging should max out at 14.5 volts.

Not if you're only running with stock lights. If you add a more powerfull headlight or running lights, the stock system has a hard time keeping up below 5k RPM.

My goal with this part was a new and heavy duty replacemnt for failed stock parts. In the process I made unit that gives better charging at low RPM.
