Exhaust System??

  • Exhaust System??

    Hi all, just got a ‘79 xs1100 and the previous owner seems to have cut the pipes down to make “shorties”. No room for a muffler or baffle now. Any ideas where I can find an exhaust system?? Google isn’t very helpful

    Welcome to the forum. First thing, is it a standard or a Special? Second are you looking for stock or aftermarket? A photo is always helpful.

      Thanks! I’ll upload a picture soon, it’s a standard. I’m looking for a full exhaust system, stock or aftermarket because of how far down the guy cut. I tried JPcycles but their 4 to 2 stuff didn’t match up. Nothing seems wrong with the headers or anything but I want to put baffles in due to the noise

        Try to find. Kerker 4-1. If you can find one. Really like mine. But bought it back in 79. Jeff

            The problem with the 4 into 1 exhausts is that they don't have much ground clearance and most of them require removal to change the oil filter. Aftermarket systems used to be fairly easy to find but not so much anymore. A short google search found this.Yamaha XS 1100 4-into-2 Exhaust - CafeRacerWebshop.com but it doesn't seem to be available anymore.

              HI DGarrett,,,,a good cheap wonderful sounding exhaust is to use the exhaust stubs if long enough and get a pair of harley dyna or larger harley mufflers, cheap and plentiful on craigslist or ebay. Dont get the sportster muffs as they are two different lengths...a lot of Harley owners pop the stock ones off and get aftermarket so there are a lot available...WONDERFUL SOUNDING, puts the Yamaha stock mufflers to shame if you like a smooth rumble sound, like a 60's 427 corvette sound. Not too loud but cool. IF your stubs are too short, they can be lengthened with some pipe extension pieces found at most auto parts stores or any muffler shop can fabricate them fairly cheap also and they can weld the entire exhaust connections so it will last a lifetime. There is a link on the site, use the search for harley mufflers by Planedick and others that detail it,,,,,do the harley mufflers, the one great thing that they made that works for the 1100's.................Mike in San Diego

                  That's good for a while Mike but the old stock pipes are really thin and hard to weld also the welds break easily. You gotta watch those Hardley take offs too, most have catalytic converters built in.

                    HOwdy,,,,what I have done in the past is use clamp-on pipe extensions that clamp inside the old pipe and outside the harley muffs or vice versa from any larger auto parts store, lengths vary from 3 to 24 inch, or any muff shop can use auto tube and make any length, od that is needed, that way the thin yam pipes squeeze onto the thicker extension pipe,,,the harley muff clamps are the best in the market or you can use automotive clamps, not as solid but workable,,,,,or you can weld the connections and it is super solid, either way works the sound makes a harley owners cry it sounds so good, that alone is worth the conversion from stock kudos to the late Planedick as he was one of the first xs sives to post a tutorial on this exact conversion

                        They make QUALITY muffler clamps as well. I had a pair and had some issues with carb tuning around 3000 rpms. I was kind of a carburetor rookie at the time though.

                          The last aftermarket exhaust was made by Mac. It appears that business went out with Covid-19. Some places may still have a Mac 4 into 1 in stock.

                          If your pockets are very deep, there's someone in Durban, South Africa who makes a new exhaust from stainless steel. It doesn't have the indentations for the axle bolts, but otherwise is as original. It sounds great, too! There may be other overseas options, but they're all very expensive.

                            Marty, after researching MAC and being directed to other forums discussing them it seems that Covid 19 was not what caused them to fold. They are based in California and new EPA guidelines are what caused their demise. They built not only aftermarket for motorcycle but hot rod as well. The hot rod forums are where I came upon the discussion concerning the EPA discussions. Sad really. The EPA is making it difficult to begin with, but we all know how extreme California is getting,. It would be great if they would relocate to Texas and build again. Who knows, maybe they will.

                              hey, they can come to Idaho! There is a great vocational school teaching welding, AND a great hot rod community as well. Most of the old guys are from SoCal, here BECAUSE of the Cali laws.
