Looks like aftermarket fuel valves were installed. If it was my bike I'd rip all that sh!t out and start over.
The last pic is about all I can help with. The black hose connects to the nipple on carb #2 IF it comes from the vacuum advance.
The first pic shows a plastic wye which shouldn't be near fuel.

If you are gonna use the aftermarket fuel valves a vac line for each valve comes from the intake boot (engine side of carbs) on carbs 1&4 (please correct me if I'm wrong someone)

Fuel from the old petcocks goes to inlet side of the AM valves, outlet side of valves goes to the lower tees on carbs. HTH

Also PLEASE be wary of fuel work indoors as we had a member catch his house on fire with a set of leaky carbs.

The yellow line in the 1st pic is being pinched. I'm confused as to what is that round thing in the 1st pic? Never saw anything like that before. I put Pingel fuel petcocks on my Yamaha years ago.

Carbs 2&3 supply vacuum to the system on the Standards, carb 2 on the Specials. That "fuel line" the PO is using for vacuum has got to go! I do not know why you have the two "Y" fittings between the carbs, unless that is between 2&3. There should be brass fittings for fuel, not plastic as Schming said.
The black vacuum hose in pic #4 NEEDS to be connected to the brass nipple on carb #2. I know that yellow hose is in the way, so re-route it when you change it for a proper vacuum line.

            +1

This is important for the bike to run properly.

I can't believe that this thing actually runs quite nicely the way these hoses are all over the place. I just today found another spout that doesn't have anything going to it. Any more ideas are appreciated. I think it was Ray that said these yellow tubes are not stock. Obviously, the carbs have been changed at some point since they don't have the Midnight Special gold tops. I've talked to a motorcycle mechanic close by and he said it would be $500 to re-do them, but that's half what I paid for it!!Click image for larger version

Take the gas tank off. Put these petcocks on. Run fuel lines from the petcock to the carbs. Get rid of all that crap and turn your fuel on and off every time like everyone else.

Great suggestion, but I still wouldn't know where all the hoses go on the carbs!!!

Alaskey2... Those fuel taps won't fit his Special, they are for a Standard. The spacing between the two mounting bolts is different.

normalthom... In your last picture, the black hose goes to the port on the right, the one on the carb body itself. That is the vacuum advance for the ignition, the hose should run down and go behind the left ignition cover.

If you want to get rid of all the other hoses and simplify....

Take all the other hoses off and those silver valves. Run a single hose from the rear port on the left fuel tap (petcock) over and down between the #3 and #4 carbs to the right fuel inlet. Cap off the front port on the left fuel tap. Then run a single hose from the right fuel tap over and down between the #1 and #2 carbs to the left fuel inlet. Cap off the front port on the right fuel tap.

Make sure you cut the new hoses to the right length, if left too long, they may pinch when the tank is lowered into position and restrict fuel flow.

Now, on, reserve and off will all function normally. No need to ever use the prime setting on the fuel taps from now on.

Don't forget to make sure there are caps on all 4 front intake boot ports.

Remember to shut off the fuel taps when parking the bike for the day.

Fuel line like this or similar will work just fine...

Thanks Phil. That's what I was hoping, but wasn't sure where everything would go. I appreciate everyones help on this. This will be my Saturday morning project this weekend. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Like I said, I can take apart and repair any home appliance, but I'm lost on this kind of stuff.

Just think of the plumbing as electric wires that flow water or gas. Big difference is you need to plug any opens you don't use. Remember, electrics CAN be shocking if you do it wrong, but plumbing will ALWAYS drip!( my motto from my part time job in electric dept. at Lowe's).

"Big difference is you need to plug any opens you don't use". That's exactly why I'm scared to death to mess with it. How in the hell am I supposed to know which ones to not use???

Think of it as a DC current. You want it to flow from the tank to the carbs. One hose from the Left petcock to the "T" fitting on the Right side carb. One hose from the Right petcock to the "T" fitting on the Left side carbs. These will connect to the REAR of the petcocks, and put a plug/cap on the front connectors. Cap ALL vacuum ports on carb holders, and you are done.

Hey Thom, the only connections you need to worry about are the ones I mentioned in my above post. It just looks complicated because of the way it is now. You'll see when you start re-doing it.
