So start on the one you take out! You have plenty of time, and it's a "spare", so no worry if something goes south.

      Weeeeeelllll,

new starter…struggles to start. When it did start, it ran as if on two cylinders. All headers were hot. I’m so pissed off right now that I can’t see straight. Any ideas???

I just cleaned the contacts in the kill switch…same symptoms.

I’m going to check the pickup wires (I’m grasping at this point), then check the coil wires under the tank.

this is HORRIBLE timing. I’m at a loss.

Oh, this is awesome….coming from the stator. This is so strange and surreal to me…this came out of NOWHERE. Why?? How?? The clicking with the original starter got worse and I got a new one…then it struggled to start and when it DID, sounded like garbage (on seemingly two cylinders). What am I missing?? What is the common denominator here?? I just want to ride this thing. I guess I have to get a new stator anyway, but is there anything else I should get?? Could the relay have something to do with it?? WHY will it not crank at full speed / power anymore???

You don't need a new stator unless there is more to the story than that melted connector.

          Just replace the connector:

Some folks prefer to eliminate the connector, and solder the wires directly, but to me that seems like butchery and it's difficult for service.

FYI, the stator connector seems to be a failure point for almost all old motorcycles.

You could use blue "butt" connectors, cheap, quick and easy fix.
